The Cube - Birmingham

Building: The Cube
Architect: MAKE
Height: 17 storeys

Not a very clear render, but this is the winning design for the extension of the Mailbox, the UK's largest fashion outlet outside of London, it will be the new neighbour for the likes of Harvey Nicks, Georgio Armani, Paris etc - This is going to be a mixed use scheme, located right next to the canals which are at the forefront of Birminghams redevelopment and opposite Birminghams skyscraper alley.

Understanderbly it will be hard to get a concept of the building but its innovative and unique and although I wasnt sure at first, its starting to really grow on me.

Any feed back would be immensly appreciated. Thanks

It will be located behind and to the left of this building and stand 30meters taller.

Views will look out over this ...

this ...

And this all approved and U/C in the area ...

And will have fantastic head on views of Birminghams future tallest, Arena Central - These plans are not definate as a re-design is underway.

Another piece of daring architecture in Birmingham. I like it from that render although it could look awful in real life.

That's really amazing. Although it might not be the most stunning piece of architecture, it is full of inspiration and character.

Birmingham really knows how to say "LOOK AT ME" in a good way.

Its from Ken Shuttleworth - Most famously associated with Swiss RE in London.

London Eye developers Mark Barfield also competed.

Description: A simple large steel and glass cube facing the canal, the structure is eaten away on its other side to create a giant atrium which spirals around as it rises, with balconied apartments looking across the city. The cube shape is enclosed on this side by the buildings original structure- a full heightfretwork screen. Even designer Ken Shuttleworth, cannot think of a precedent for this.

Dont apoligise, its never gonna be everyone's cup of tea.

Its like Marmite, you either love it or hate it.

It wants to rival this Building which is covered in 15,000 alluminium discs.

Silver against Gold ... umm

Dont forget another aspect of "The Cube" is that it will have the reflection of the water on its cladding which will be unbelievable.

How will it be coloured? In the rendering it looks like there will be lots of different shades. It looks neat though. Is it true that the Mailbox is the largest retail outlet outside of London (does that include Bluewater in Kent)? How big is it?

I think he means high end fashion outlet. Though if you include FCUK as high end fashion you are stretching the definition a bit. This is just a bit of developer hyperbole.

funky...we could use it in this Bham. architecture here, while nice, is conservative; that's why it's nice, b/c it's tried and true.

Wow, that looks ugly as shit. Is it made out of pennies?

Hopefully it won't look as bad when completed.

Awful building... and like Selfridges will probably be built very cheaply and end up looking pretty shoddy even after a few years. I'll be very dismayed if they take this any further.

Brittania, you're about as optimistic as a turd. Stop being so plain boring and pesismistic will you. Do you actually have anything good to say about anything that isnt from London or in the north?

it'll be very interesting seen as it's a midrise-shopping centre type thing, but i don't really like the look of it.

God, theres to many children on these boards.

Its not a "mid-rise shopping center thing" ... Its a lucrative architectural mixed use jem, which will have a 5* hotel, luxury apartments and top of the range fashion stores.

People are to damn sheepish. Try something different. Birmingham did with Selfridges, and its paid of big time. People were saying how awful it was going to look because knowones ever seen anything like that done before.

You can never get an idea of what somethings going to look like until it gets under construction.

If we all copied each other, every city on this planet would look like Rome.

Innovation - Try it.
