Wheels Park - Birmingham

Birmingham City Football Club can today reveal the striking designs for the proposed 60,000-seat state of the art multi-use stadium development funded by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation.

With the City Council's full support, "Wheels Park" in the Eastside of the city could be the future home to The City of Birmingham Stadium.

The stadium will represent the leading edge of multi-purpose multi-sport stadia, setting the benchmark in stadia design, integrating an exciting mix of bars, restaurants, club retail and casino into the fabric of the stadium concept.

The first of its kind in the UK accommodating both rectilinear and oval pitch sports, the new stadium with its moving seating tiers will enable the 3.1 million visiting patrons each year to enjoy Premiership football, international cricket, world-class athletic competitions and the greatest international musicians under a vast 70,000sf moving roof.

The project that will see an investment exceeding £200 million and will create over 2500 permanent and construction job opportunities, without even taking into account those that can potentially be generated by suppliers of goods and services to the stadium.

Furthermore the Club and developer's vision to build a unique national leisure destination visited by sports fans, tourists, business people and local residents alike will not only economically benefit the city of Birmingham but will improve the quality of life for inhabitants and the image of the area, bringing it to regional and national prominence.

Birmingham City Football Club has been proactively campaigning for backing of the project from the community and those that will see the benefit of the stadium complex both now and in the future. Over 6000 people have signed the petition in the first week and this will be presented to Birmingham City Council to illustrate the region's desire to see the City of Birmingham Stadium become a physical and cultural icon in the West Midlands.

The Club's Chief Executive, Karren Brady: "This is a fantastic opportunity for the city of Birmingham and the region. The people of Birmingham stand to benefit hugely both economically and socially from the development and proudly witness their city become host to world-class events that will put Birmingham and the West Midlands on the map for years to come. If the second city were to miss out because of a lack of support from our local authority in applying for the necessary casino, it would be a tragedy"

Las Vegas Sands' UK representative, Rodney Brody, said: "Birmingham City are an incredibly dynamic club and it's great to be working with them on this unique opportunity to create the UK's first multi-sports stadium of true international quality, right in the heart of Birmingham, bringing much needed regeneration to the site, together with 2,000 jobs for local people. We've enjoyed positive discussions with Birmingham City Council and we are totally committed to the city."

The seats are way too far from the pitch! They better sort that out or its going to end up like one of those soulless athletics turned football stadia! I'm guessing the cause of this is for cricket? I don't think they should move from Edgbaston its a great place!

Awesome looking design though!

If you read the description for the football games, the seats will be moved forward, but while Athletcis take place they will retract back.

Yeah we need renderings in 'football mode', and the seats in blue! I take it Villa and City are sharing the stadium then?

Nope - Villa are expanding Villa Park to over 50,000.

This is just for Birmingham City and Athletics.

Its means Brum by 2010 (Football stadiums) could have 2x 50,000+, 1x 30,000+ stadium and not to forget Wolves which we classify as a Brum team only a few miles away are expanding thier stadium to 46,500.

Well i expect villa park wont increase for a while. Fans would go crazy if they wasted the money needed for the team, on the the ground.

If those diagonal braces on the exterior are painted concrete, this thing will look dated before it is finished. But if they finished them in brushed aluminum or steel, it will look great for a while.

Pretty positive its steel - I dont think concrete would get past Birmingham City Council after the catastrophe of the 60's
