Well it's better this way...the school can now tear down the useless and unproductive rear of the structure. Preservationists can't possibly rally against education!!
Clearly developers are bad, evil, and only care about money (and money is always a bad thing), schools are good, nice, and only care about educating (educating is always a good thing). On this type of matter, comprimise or common sense doesn't play...only absolutes of good and bad. Good job preservationists...way to send the economic development away for the sake of this... ![]() Now the school can use money otherwise earmarked for books or teacher salaries to rehab the Miami News Building and make it useful. Instead of scholarships, the school can use the money for the annual upkeep of the place. Great foresight...way to pick your preservationist battles. Pure genius. |

ok the tower was approved....
its still 62 stories, but the orientation of the tower was changed, its no longer running diagonally across the property, and its more slender....a welcomed improvement

The people at Terra Group are smart...
They donate the Freedom Tower to MDCC a day before the commission voted on their 62 story condo project! And it got approved! They also rid themselves of a huge potential liability. The Freedom Tower may be pretty to some, but it is a non-economically viable building!!! It's been useless for decades. The building would have been a huge burden to the future owners of the condo tower who I believe were going to pay the maintenance for this non-economically viable building. Good riddance. It's someone elses problem now! suckers. |

I can't believe how much these guys disrespect the history of Miami!!!!
First they tore down the Everglades, now they want to disfigure the Freedom tower, what's next???? A new Condo tower in 1830 Fort Dallas???? Or an attached condo tower to Viscaya? They have enough space in Overtown, they could revitalize that area and live alone the historic landmarks of Miami |

^ easy guy the everglades lost all its charm and charisma in the postwar era when they took off its tower and clad the base in van der rohe style black glass (odd mix with a med. tower) so its fate was destined from the 70s on (sad though it could have been a gem if kept in tact).
the freedom tower is having an EXTENSION be demolished, the original tower is being kept fully intact and in reality this is probably the only (or the most accessible/viable) way to keep it as a landmark open to the public. i dont know if u noticed or not but its been essentially closed for over 20 years. there were alot of good ones here that never lasted long enough or got to be realized as planned but in the end i think our current progress may far supercede our history/legacy and that, just like in sobe where it took demo to realize the 'charisma' of deco (absence is greater than presence) in downtown the projects are ushering in a new era of context conscious condo towers and urban infill projects . newer projects are now much more integrated into their context and deal with their site in unique (sometimes odd) ways like paramount bay, the 5th ambassador, the kobi karp project at 1121 brickell or something and the loft 2. again i apologize for the rant but i really like this thread because the progress and history and proposals of miami r really unique - miami is a spurt and sputter growth pattern city. now we r in a major spurt of growth that hopefully wont sputter, but the eras are something you can read in the skylines and streetscapes of south florida. heres to the boom never busting ...
