Proponents hope to see Ann Arbor to Traverse City train service happen by 2025
By Ryan Stanton | MLive.com

February 17, 2015

The Michigan Land Use Institute has officially launched its A2TC campaign in support of passenger rail service between Ann Arbor and Traverse City.

The Traverse City-based group is hoping the 240-mile route, which would take advantage of existing freight rails, will be a reality by 2025, according to published reports out of Monday night's campaign kickoff forum held in Traverse City.

"Big ideas like this happen when hundreds and thousands of people come together and believe in it," Hans Voss, MLUI executive director, told 9and10news.com.
I wonder if the trains will be semi-fast (110+) or just slow lemons?

Why would a traverse city train go to Ann Arbor? It could be an extension of the Wolverine past Pontiac. Maybe have some trains split at Holly and go to Saginaw and Bay City.

There just seems to be a lot of opportunities for rail in Michigan and this one doesn't make much sense. Why not a Blue Water that goes to Detroit from Lansing instead of all the way to Port Huron?

I'm sure it will be potato speed, regardless.

Mostly FRA - it is easier to meet safety standards using a locomotive than a train set. Even Acela is closer to a locomotive pulled consist, though a married one. The other issue is to do with reliability. Amtrak does not have the best record - or best trust - in motive power. Easier to swap out a locomotive when needed then to take down a whole consist.

Michigan coast to coast: Passenger train service from Detroit to Grand Rapids being studied

By Ryan Stanton | MLive.com

February 27, 2015

While a debate rages in Lansing over millions spent on idle railcars for yet-to-happen commuter rail services between Ann Arbor and Howell and Ann Arbor and Detroit, talks of a new Michigan coast-to-coast passenger rail line are picking up.

The Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority's governing board voted Thursday night to authorize entering into a $100,000 contract with Transportation Economics and Management Systems for a rail ridership and cost estimate study for potential passenger rail service along the Detroit-Lansing-Grand Rapids corridor.

The study will seek to determine the demand and feasibility for new intercity passenger rail between Michigan's east and west coasts, intersecting major population centers including Detroit, Lansing, Grand Rapids and Holland.
There seems to be a tsunami rail and transit proposals in Michigan lately...

Are there any trains coming out that take advantage of the new FRA regulations yet? Are there any projects that are looking to employ the new regulations to provide cheaper, better quality trains?

I think an LRT project in Chattanooga is trying to, as are the MTA and MBTA on LIRR Lines and the Indigo Line respectively.
But other than that I do not think there are any projects that are.

House Approves Amtrak Funding, Rewrites Rules To Allow Furry Riders

March 04, 201511:08 PM ET
David Schaper

But the biggest breakthrough, at least for train-loving pet owners, is a provision allowing passengers to bring dogs and cats on board.

Under a pilot program, Amtrak will designate at least one car per train, where feasible, for pets, so that passengers "may transport a domesticated cat or dog in the same manner as carry-on baggage."

That provision was included by Rep. Jeff Denham, R-Calif., who says he's been pushing for pets on trains since he was prevented from taking his French bulldog on an Amtrak train several years ago.

Indiana DOT scuttles Amtrak Hoosier State

Friday, March 06, 2015
Written by Douglas John Bowen

Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce

The Indiana Department of Transportation on Friday, March 6, 2015, officially pulled the plug on continuing Amtrak's Hoosier State passenger rail service, with the train's last day of service now slated for April 1.

Service between Indianapolis, the state capital, and Chicago will be reduced to a thrice-weekly service each way, protected by Amtrak's long-distance Cardinal, which links Chicago and Indianapolis with Washington, D.C. The route also serves the Indiana cities of Crawfordsville, Lafayette (and by extension neighboring West Lafayette), Rensselaer, and Dyer, which have lobbied strenuously for keeping the train operating.

That or a mobile office or school classroom. Sources are saying it hit a transfer truck and the pics appear to show a trailer used to haul things like that.

This looks like a catastrophe but the media isn't really reporting it. CNN thinks some racist fraternity scandal is more important.

Any possibility that someone will buy it and save it? Or is going straight into a dumpster?

The New Haven one went to the Danbury Railway Museum... Hopefully one of the Museums or Railway Clubs saves it...or NJT could place it at one of their stations. Secaucus and Trenton have newer Solari Boards...

On track: Details for downtown Miami railway hub are revealed

The idea, All Aboard Florida executives say, is to build a world-class, iconic complex that will generate business development downtown and provide a seamless connection to Metrorail and Metromover services at the nearby Government Center transit station.

“It will be one of the most important buildings in the city of Miami for generations, the grand central station of a major city in the United States,” Sanders said.

A shopping mall under rail track. Because the US doesn't have enough of those already. So innovative.
