Penn Station project shows Amtrak's efficiency, and need for infrastructure investment

The world's shortest rail is back in service.

The historic Angel's Flight, in downtown Los Angeles, re-opened today.

Penn Station to add porta potties during bathroom renovations

But either way, the men’s rooms will be shut down all at once — forcing the portable toilets on male travelers for the duration — and the women’s rooms when it’s their turn...

"Departure at Dawn." Artwork by Grif Teller featuring Pennsy 4-4-4-4 "Duplex Drive" (T-1) #5507 departing westbound from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This piece was completed in June of 1980, long after the PRR ceased to exist.

Not sure if people are aware, but there is an effort afoot to build a new PRR T1 by an organization called The T1 Trust. If successful, this effort will result in the only-existent duplex drive locomotive. The goal of the trust is to see if--as suspected--the T1 could set a new steam locomotive top-speed record, and if the problems encountered by crews operating duplex locomotives--such as wheel slip and reliability--could've been resolved with further development, development which was made unnecessary by dieselization of railway locomotives in the U.S. and around the world at the beginning of the 1950's onwords.

The T1 locomotive is a personal favorite of myself and others because of the streamlined design, and exceptional mechanical complexity inherent in the very large locomotives which had duplex drive. The trust has already made decent progress--with such components as a cab, prow, boxpok, and tender in the works. I hope that someday, we can all see one of the most splendid, if ill-fated steam locomotives in history storming down the tracks again!
