I couldn't see the map above but here is one I found on google ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Bible_Belt.png ). So technically Houston isn't part of the bible belt but neither is the most religious state/city in America Utah/Salt Lake city. Houston in my experience has just many annoying bible thumping people as Dallas or San Antonio even if isn't technically in the "bible belt". Hell I live in Lubbock and people say it has more churches per capita then anywhere else in Texas and it isn't even part of the bible belt so whatever....
Incase you were talking about me, I would call you ignorant or sophomoric. But in any case, there are other factors in play here. Obviously the BIBLE belt wouldn't include the Mormon religion. I wonder why.

The point is someone used their personal experience of watching a TV show and never visiting Dallas to claim there was more religious fanatics then Houston. I don't believe some arbitrary map when I can find other ones that include Houston and the mormons.... Southern Baptists imo definitely have a huge following east of I-35 in Texas.

Well then it should be called the "religious" belt, and not nessesarly "bible" belt, catch my drift? And not to sound like the majority of not-knowing any better-young, houstonian, posters; Dallas is generally thought of to be more religious. Its a sterotype, none the less, but its just word of mouth. And Houston might be considered to be the bigger "Bible Humper" (no offense to our religious posters) amoung fellow texans.

*edit* and sorry for (perhaps) giving off sarcasm and an attitude, I don't intend to give that off, or direct it at you.

houston is still part of the bible belt and historically/ culturally has been more "southern" than the rest of texas. lakewood has nothing to do with but the overall prevailance of evnagelical/baptist influence. i'm saying this as someone who was born and raised up north and then lived here for 16 years. of course this is declining as more and more northerners/hispanics and foriegners move into the area.

btw, WTF is crunk?

Jmancuso. It's basically the same thing as hype in the northeast.
as far as music, it's basically about having fun, being crazy drunk and shit like that. Memphis started it a long time ago.

Never seen that movie. But anybody that knows the history of the music knows that Memphis started it. From the old gangsta pat days to the hypnotize minds...While Memphis was making music like that, Atlanta was making music similar to Miami with the booty shakin shit. Memphis didn't call it crunk though. they called it get buck.

Concerning original topic, Houston may not displace Atlanta as the number #1 Black Mecca anytime soon. But, even before the huge influx of mostly African American Katrina refugees, it clearly has become one of the major black magnets. The people of Houston have proven very generous in welcoming such a large number of newcomers from New Orleans. There's little doubt that over time, these internal refugees & their children will contribute much to Houston in future decades, as Vietnamese & Central American refugees have done before. And Houston seems to be one of the few metros which is both centrally located along enough migration-immigration pathways & also has enough geographic & economic space that it has remained an attractive destination for both black and white Americans as well as Latinos, Asians, and Middle Easterners. In addition to African Americans, Houston has become one of the favorite destinations for Nigerians & other Africans. Nigerians have told me they are drawn to Houston because it reminds them of Lagos! And Houston attracts a significant number of Afro-Caribbeans too. Of course, much same could be said for Dallas-Ft Worth also.

My neighbors across the street are Nigerian. They say it reminds them of Lagos because so many of their people are here (there are well over 125,000 Nigerians in Houston). I think Houston's population will continue to diverse, and make it one of the most, if not the most ethincally diverse city in the U.S., with not one race being THE race.

There obviously were alot of Houston boosters in this thread, but as an outsider looking in heres what I think. Im from the Columbus, Oh area which was also named "the #1 city for blacks families" by BET the same year Black Enterprise named Houston, tx. Columbus is a relatively new city thats been growing and as was the only northern city for blacks on that B.E list Houston was on. I won't lie, I was impressed by Houston when I visted a relative there....very impressed.

We stayed in an area by "The Galleria". Met alot of former mid-to-upper crust Detroiters who recently moved there. Very clean, lots of quality black businesses, resturants. Unfortunatly one of those Texans keyed my rental suv which almost ruined my experience there. Overall I enjoyed the city very much and will likely be back again. I wouldnt move there but it would be a excellent area for a second home during the cold winter months in Ohio.

I'm sure the black population is going to rise even more by the next census because of may black families lurd to Houston...

Anyways...Here's a thing to show how diverse Houston is and where most of the races reside.

Oh, I forgot about this thread and the answer is still NO!

Atlanta and D.C. are black meccas because of their huge black middle classes and historically black colleges and the historical cultural signifcance to blacks and most importantly the cities are dominated by blacks and have black majorities.

If your city is not majority black it's not even a contender!

And Houston's black music scene is not that impressive. It's only rappers and Beyonce. Atlanta has stars in all genres of black music. Not to mention, Philly, Detroit, NY, New Orleans, Memphis, Miami, Chicago, Oakland, Cleveland, all contributed more black entertainers than "H-town".

D.C. and Atlanta have not had non-black mayors in decades!

Atlanta still outpaces Houston and Dallas in black population growth by a very, very, very longshot.

I will agree that Houston is just as diverse as Miami.

I do agree I think if any city is the black mecca it's atlanta. I visit and I seen blacks living in nice homes. It's a lot of progession there in the black community and as a black man I love to see that. But I like Houston too though because were doing things there also.
