DIFA better be built! There are doubts over Columbus and Minerva recently, so it would be nice to see a tall skyscraper, even if it isn't as tall as we'd hoped for. I might have a years break from architecture and see what developments there have been since. Or i could go and eat cake. mmmmm cake

Superb architectural quality...

Seems like London has patiently waited all this time just to build the "very best" designs.

I just got back from London and well I simply cant stop being exhilarated by the amazing place ! truly it is a wonder, I know its corny but really thats how I feel , despite is flaws the place is just damn brilliant and its gonna get better !

Whilst I was there an American said to me that hed been there 2 weeks and had decided to move there as soon as possible, he said that we Brits dont seem to realise what a gem we have. Well its what he said .

there are things that made me mad about London, fuming actually, including how Piccadilly circus isnt pedestrianised ! parliament square is digustingly inaccessible, the South Bank needs to be far more green, more bins. hehe

^ I wouldn't want Piccadilly Circus to be pedestrianised. It would lose its energy and character. The atmosphere would feel a bit dead.

I agree about Parliament Square.

The South Bank is a lovely walk, with some utterly spectacular views across the Thames, but yes, it could do with a little more greenery in some places (and yes, definitely more bins).

Some of us recognise it!

Piccadilly Circus - no, that's the character of the place, though it does need a clean and they need to get rid of Burger King to give it a slightly less tacky feel.

Parliament Square - totally agree. The Kiwis have the right idea when they swarm the square on Waitunga (sp) day, stopping all the traffic... you can finally walk across to the grass without having to run!

Bins... ah bins. This is my most frequent gripe, especially in Westminster. I know about bombs etc., but come on guys, it looks a ******* mess. If you can't have bins, employ street cleaners like they do in the City.

The tower on the far left, the Heron Tower, has started preliminary ground works. Its been much delayed, but it finally looks as though this will start to rise eventually. I for one, can't wait. Not the same quality as the other city proposals, but I really like it.

Its likely to be 4 floors taller than that. And the Stock Exchange tower in the middle, infront of T42 is being reclad as we speak. Well maybe not on a sunday

I disagree.

Whilst it's not as immediately striking or eye-catching as Leadenhall or SwissRe, the quality is still there. If you look closer at the detail, it's a very clever design - the building's profile appears differently from each of its 4 sides; the lifts are situated on the outside of the building (like Lloyds); the floors are divided into a series of "villages" stacked on top of each other; the north facade includes some dramatic cross-bracing; the cladding looks just as good as (if not better) than the other proposals; the building is very well proportioned and its spire creates a good pinnacle.

Also, its location is more central and prominent than the other towers, being situated on a busy junction opposite a major transport interchange. Also don't forget the street level improvements around the tower, including Heron Plaza and the retail/commercial space that is part of the project.

yup I like it, no problemo, but if we were to pick only one of the proposed scrapers to be built, I wouldn't expect many to pick Heron. I really, really love it, but it just doesn't have the same hype and prestige of the newer projects, mainly due to its long journey to construction. It will really add to the cluster though. Is it expected to start in 2006 then Will? I was on holiday when the news came through and didnt catch all the details.

I think the spire really adds to it imo. London needs more spires to reflect pre-fire London.
