You guys are very lucky. I wish our Trump Tower was going to be that tall!

From an Adrian smith interview...

Quote:
How does contextualism relate to Trump Tower and Burj Dubai?

That’s a good question. On Trump Tower the heights of the surrounding buildings have an influence on the massing. The first setback relates to the Wrigley Building, the second setback relates to the height of Marina City and River Plaza, and the third setback relates to the 330 North Wabash.

The texture of IBM influenced the texture of Trump, and the rhythm and lightness of the Wrigley Building influenced the materials and mullion spacing. I think the challenge in making this a contextual piece is that it’s located in the midst of several dynamic buildings that each have their own importance to the city and to the field of architecture in general.
It sure does compliment the IBM building. Adrian Smith is good. Thanks to Chicago Shawn for capturing the relation.

thanks taller. It is really a shame for Toronto that TTT is not taller. TO has a great cluster in the CBD but it could really use at least one supertall, considerably above the rest. What's the reasoning for not making TTT taller in such a megalopolis like TO?

One concern I had expressed to the folks from SOM (when I saw the initial models) was the microclimate effects on this site. IBM Plaza was always known for dangerous ground-level winds, and I was concerned about wind shear coming straight down the face of TIHT. I'm delighted to see the outrigger mullions that will create a lot of little eddies to help dissipate the wind shear.

MY guess is that the rapid cladding of the Trump Tower and its lack in Dubai is a factor of the extreme difference in climate. The cladding of the Trump protects interior workers from the cold, while its lack in Dubai allows for desert breezes, if any; just a guess of course.

I think some of the turbulance was probably mitigated when the building went from being it's original boxy bohemoth to something a bit more curvaceous. I'm sure the reasoning behind the design changes were purely aesthetic, but, they will certainly help the wind situation as well.

Brilliant. You're probably not far off at all.

A truly beautiful city; we spent a week there and enjoyed it immensely; your photos are splendid; I'll be returning to your photoblog from time to time.
