(Shot it after going to the Sullivan stencil exhibit at Crown Hall - awesome - today was the last day, though )

Prediction: there will be many unhappy people (me included) here not very long from now when Jack's new beanstalk stops its growth before reaching the heavens.

It's be like "hey, the show shouldn't be ending; this should just be the intermission"

The core is supposedly topped-out, only thing left is 12m circular plantroom and 70m spire.

^ Shhh - no one is supposed to know yet about the massive yellow filament crown that Trump is topping the tower with- it is meant to be a big surprise.

QUESTION:

Is it my imagination or is there something unrelated to the height of Trump that allows it to provide such a myraid of different profiles depending on where in that 360° rotation (and all the variety that distance from and away adds) that exceeds any other building in Chicago?

Perhaps its is the curvature that is not circular added to the set-backs but, IMHO, the building is delightfully chamilion like in all those different poses. Maybe some of that special viewing power comes from its strange location serving as the foot of Wabash when looking north from the Loop and South Loop or south on Rush from the Near North Side.

adrian smith is an architect experienced at doing high rises. he recognizes that a tall building has a responsibility to address the many faces it provides, not just specified angles. it isn't a custom home.....or 300 custom homes benefitting from a boosted FAR. it's not a sum of its parts. it's a completely different animal.

that's the difference that makes pat fitzgerald, p&h, brininstool lynch, and other so-called high rise architects that were thrown a bone during this last building boom look like amateurs.

trump is a great building by a great architect and the real miracle here is that adrian smith took a client who thinks getting the 'gold package' option on a car is classy to this high level of architecture... despite himself.

let's also credit the City of Chicago which sent him back to the drawing board a number of times before the building became right for Chicago.

i will to a degree, but bear in mind it's the same city that allowed/is allowing all the garbage (that in my opinion is unworthy of chicago) to be built at central station and the south loop.

you needn't even go that far: check State Street due north of Trump to cause real architectural depression that may be suicidal in nature.

Chicago's Trump Tower ready to be 'topped off'

Tribune staff report
10:40 PM CDT, August 15, 2008

Construction workers plan to make the last significant concrete pour Saturday at the top of the Trump International Hotel & Tower, a milestone in the construction of what will be the second-largest building in Chicago.

The "topping off" of the skyscraper's concrete core will be commemorated in an unofficial ceremony, said Joe Payne, assistant superintendent for McHugh Construction. Tradesmen will raise a bucket of concrete with an attached American flag more than 1,100 feet to the top of the 92-story building at 401 N. Wabash Ave., to make the final pour.

Another ceremony on Tuesday will have supervisors, structural engineers and company representatives pour a bucket of concrete at the top of the building, said building construction manager Tim Snyder. In late September, Donald Trump will attend a ceremony putting the building's spire in place.

When completed, Trump Tower will stand around 1,350 feet, the largest building completed in the United States since the Sears Tower. Containing nearly 180,000 cubic yards of concrete, it will be the second largest concrete-reinforced structure in the world, after the Burj Dubai building under construction in the United Arab Emirates.
