Chicago Giants- John Hancock Center vs. Sears Tower

Since this is the City vs. City subforum, I thought it would be a good place to put a building vs. building thread. If there is another proper place, a moderator can just move it. Anyway, which do you prefer, the Sears Tower or the John Hancock Center. Explain.

They're both incredible, John Hancock's X support design is unmatched by anything out there, however the Sears Tower is just so incredibly tall and I enjoy it's setbacks. Some may find the Sears Tower tough to love but I think it's incredible which is why IMO it just edges out JHC.

Both buildings are incredible but I have to vote for the JHC.

It's location is better. It looks better. I like the way the top of the building is lit, oppose to the Sears which likes to do the random colors at random times. The only reason I have to like the Sears over the JHC is because of the height advantage, but the JHC isn't exactly stout.

So I vote for the John Hancock Center, but both buildings are incredibly bold being that they are both large and black. Something that you certainty don't see every day making Chicago's skyline very unique.

Full disclosure: when I was little I lived in a third-floor apartment in Albany Park with a distant view of the Sears Tower. Every day after preschool I would come home and talk to it and make a model of it out of Legos. Once I forced my parents to buy a really long piece of paper and draw the Sears Tower on it--including lines for all 110 stories.

So for sentimental reasons, I'm voting for Sears. They're two sides of the same coin, anyway. We're into monolithic architecture when it comes to skyscrapers in Chicago. Both give the feeling of a kind of otherworldly dominance; the Sears Tower has an advantage over Hancock in its height, which is simply astounding to see in person; the Hancock has an advantage in its relative simplicity, its starkness, and of course the X-bracings that hold the whole thing together.

In terms of the look of the building and impression on the outside... Sears. In terms of usefullness and purpose... JHC. JHC is Chicago's most loved skyscraper because it's one of Chicago's most public skyscrapers. It belongs to everyone.

John Hancock Center, without a shadow of doubt for me.

I always did like it the best of Chicago's skyscrapers. It's not something I can explain too well, but there it is.

Upclose, I'd have to say JHC. From the skyline point-of-view, Sears is more imposing. I agree that the location of JHC is better, but the view from Sears tower is nicer.

If you're going to make a thread like this, you have to include at least one photo of each building you're talking about, even if we all know what JHC and Sears look like! just makes it easier.

John Hancock Center

Sears Tower

JHC. I love its sloping structure. Sears Tower is a little too boxy for me anyway. I used to like the Sears Tower better but that was because I thought the JHC was the Sears Tower. They are both tall, big, and black and so I made a silly mistake.
