Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece:

The district around the old Byzantine fortifications of Thessaloniki was declared a heritage site in the 1910s:

Some of the prewar buildings of Thessaloniki provide stunning flashbacks to what the city once was:

Another of the elegant, early 20th century Thessaloniki buildings that still survive amid the modern city's glass and cement maze:

Aristotelous Square was designed as the showcase of the new city, after the 1917 fire:

The Society of Macedonian Studies, across the street from the White Tower, is one of the city's landmarks, one of the city's foremost cultural institutions and the host of the State Theater of Northern Greece, one of the country's best theatrical troupes:

Many of the wide main thoroughfares of downtown Thessaloniki are lined with plane trees and parks:

Thessaloniki today is an amalgam of the fascinating old, such as the White Tower, the Byzantine tower that is the city's symbol, and the new, such as these 1970's buildings lining the eastern shore:

Crete:

The Allied Cemetery in Souda commemorates the Commonwealth troops that fell defending the island against the Nazis:

The Minoan royal palace of Knossos, some of it restored according to British archeologist's Sir Arthur Evans' directions, is a definite must-see for all those who choose to spend any amount of time in Crete.

The rugged northern coast of Lasithi prefecture offers some unforgettable sights.

The resort hotels of Elounda offer world class service and amenities in a natural setting that must be seen to be believed.

That first picture of the Monestary reminds me of this one in Trabzon, Turkey

although yours looks more built into the cave and more attractive

Excellent work!!!

PS: Leafs, did you watch the last game between the Leafs and the Canes? I haven't followed the Canes as much, but I was wondering how they played. I remember the earlier victory of the Leafs over the Canes, though.

Thanks Raleigh!

Yes I watched the game last night as I am a die-hard fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The game was really fast and it was tied 3-3 but Carolina scored with only 18 seconds left and they ended up winning 4-3.

The new rules of the NHL have made the game extremely fast and filled with lots of action. You should check it out.
