Apparently there is now a piling rig on site - which would suggest that groundwork is beginning. However, a construction contract for the above-ground works has yet to be finalized.

Just because we dont know about an 'above-ground' construction contract being signed...doesn't mean it hasn't happened.

New, larger rendering of the Pinnacle and Leadenhall.

Btw, I've changed the thread status to "prep", since they've begun piling and groundwork now.

Yes, it will be appreciated. Look at Swiss Re.

And of course it will be expensive, but the public have absolutely no right to moan about that (but no doubt some will be stupid enough to) because it is being paid for by developers.

This building is beautiful and really original but I don't know why, I'm not quite convinced about it's location. The City's skyline is bound to be one of the most photogenic and original clusters of Europe (the view from the West End banks of the Thames, with St. Paul's, Tate Modern and the Temple buildings is just great), but it can be easily ruined. The Gherkin is far too good in my opinion to be overruled by a much higher building. The Pinnacle just quite fits, but the Leadenhall is out of place. I might be quite strange, since I love Tower 42 and I think it fits in really nicely, but still I think that we must be careful about how many high rises we build in the area.

I'd rather see them in Canary Wharf than bang in the middle of the City. But that's just my view.

Constuction News Magazine reports that Brookfield have been signed up as subcontractors for the steel and cladding, which pretty much confirms this tower will be built. They are expected to take over the site from July 2009.

It's a pity such an iconic building isn't just a little bit taller. Just an extra 10 to 20 meters would do. When it's finished London's skyline is going to be absolutely amazing! I think it might even end up being more stunning than Dubai's. Dubai has great looking towers but the towers don't form a nice cluster. London's towers on the other hand really compliment each other.

the tower is being built to the maximum height allowed, Due to Airspace restrictions because of London's City Airport. The limit is 1000ft, if you add the towers height plus the ground's height above sea level you get to this figure approximately
