I still can't believe all that bracing and prop work they have there holding up the sides of the enormous hole. I'm not sure I'd dare to go into it!

Foundations are ready !

Ready to take off.

These are the largest piles in the UK that have been laid. They sink to 65.5m below the site, surpassing the previous record holder Moorhouse's by a depth of 8.5 metres.

must admit my understanding of it is that the core is imminent and ready to go once the tower cranes are up, and the latest site photos seem to show they're ready. Unlike RS where they're doing the basement first to ground, we seem to understand that the core is starting shortly and the basement and then superstructure will fill in around it......hopefully.

anyway, today from a snatched lunchtime Iphone:

making steady progress catching up with the excavation the southern end of the site.

there was a big red mobile crane on the northern most gantry (gate 1) - not sure what its needed for, but suggests heavy lifting in northern end of site (nearest Heron) where the Favco can't reach. Perhaps crane base for t/c 2?

anyway - very busy on site, more people than I've seen before. Plus lots of interested people queueing up to peep through the two plastic windows.

Off topic, but why did Moorhouse's piles need to be so deep? That's more that half the above ground height!

All I can think is that it's built pretty much where the River Walbrook flowed, so maybe the ground there is unstable alluvium or summat?

I think this was necessary as the tunnels (and a station?) for Cross-rail, London's new underground railway, will pass right beneath it.

Last I heard we were hoping for late 2012. Hopefully it won't be too far from being complete when the Olympics is on.

I think the best we can hope for is that it is at the same point of construction the Heron tower is right now, for the Olympics...pretty much topped out, but cladding still going on, and tower cranes still around it...

It will still look massive on the skyline though....

As ashlar said they were this deep for Crossrail, pretty incredible for a 19 storey building! If you are interested there is some more information here:

at lunchtime today you had to elbow your way through the crowds. This is gaining momentum. Many viewers, people chatting by the porthole, old, young, bearded, non-bearded and even some with high viz jackets enjoying talking about it. Incredible. Any of you the American chap with a girlfriend who talked about 'rebar'. I was a bit jealous! She knew her beans!

surely this is the core? Much action

keltbray doing sterling work on the remaining demo

we have impetus, and impetus with aplomb.
