Concrete does not rot, many 20th century buildings have concrete facades, and the only maintenance required is a bit of a clean

Unfortunately not, this buiding was origonally planned to be 307m tall, but Heathrow would not allow it as it would pose a danger to passing aircraft

That is why I am fairly confident that this will be built eventually...If they redesigned it to be a ground scraper, it would be very uneconomical as land prices are so high - it will be built in time

That's exactly right. London is very much like New York. With land prices skyrocketing and so few sites approved for large towers, developers are in a rush to acquire sites, get the maximum leasable area approved and then either build right away or wait for the market to swing their way. Either way, it's gonna get built.

Over the river, in the City, plans are quietly being redrawn to top The Shard as the central icon for London. The builders of The Pinnacle are revising costly designs for the £950 million tower in Bishopsgate.

The aim of Brookfield Multiplex is to wrest control of the stalled development from Middle Eastern investors. A spokeswoman for the Canadian-owned contractor confirmed, “we are re-designing the tower”.

Architect Kohn Pederson Fox is re-working plans to simplify the cladding on the 945-foot tower.

The aim is to save at least £50 million on the £550 million construction cost. But that’s only part of a plan to make the development viable by slashing the total cost from £950 million to £700 million.

Another £200 million saving would come from wiping out the liability to repay the original investors, who bought the site in May 2007."

Extra height will be no consolation for a change in design. I could live with inferior quality cladding but not with a gross simplification of the sublime shape. Bracing myself for a disappointment now.

This unfortunately can not have a height increase due to CAA restrictions on max crane height over London.
Unless they relax the rules a bit which is unlikely.

Hard to imagine they'd bother redesigning for more height if they knew they couldn't get it.

It will probably just be simpler cladding and perhaps changing the shape to maximise floor plates,this was done before and had the effect of raising the "shoulder" a bit.
A height increase would be great but probably unlikely.

How could you slash 50 million off the building cost and hope to end up with something better than before?
