Hong Kong Giants- 2 International Finance center vs. Bank of China Tower

After the NYC skyscrapers poll, I thought this one would be interesting. So which do you prefer between these beautiful Hong Kong buildings.

2 International Finance Center(Tall one on right for those of you who don't know)

--------or--------
Bank of China Tower

Argh.. haha. I love both but I go with 2IFC because it is just so tall but very easy on the eyes. Bank of China's shape just boggles the mind.

Bank of China - it's a far more sophisticated design!

2IFC I've never understood why the BOC is so popular. I've never liked its design.

warg. i definitely vote for BOC because i grew up in love with her the moment i met her on faded old hk movies and canto dramas. she and i go waaay back. and last yeear when i finally made a pilgrimage to hk i mounted her the first chance i got. and i melted at the sight of hk from her vista and the first strains of a leslie cheung soundtrack in my head.

hk is so amazing. every corner of it is haunted by memories of this or that movie i watched as a kid. the most delightful thing though is the disconcerting bridge HK makes with my childhood memories of places and people in singapore. old relatives in singapore who used to speak cantonese (but who have since abandoned it for mainstream mandarin) find incarnations in the people i met in hk last year. public housing, flats and apartments, which have since undergone alterations and sprucing up in singapore, look pretty much like the ones i grew up in as a kid when i visited some in hongkong. cheesy cantonese serial dramas continue to thrive in hongkong, whereas in singapore they have since been transplanted with our own serials and taiwanese idol dramas. there is always the nostalgic surge of familiarity when the opening strains to a typical cantonese serial drifts within hearing range on the streets of kowloon hemmed in by residences carved out of canyons of concrete.

hong kong has undergone some pretty amazing transformations over the years, but i'd venture to say that there's more to a past you could find in hk than in singapore, and having subscribed to a disproportionate dose of hk culture as a kid i now find more of a past walking the streets of a city i only first set foot in last year than in a city i have lived in all my life.

oh i strayed from the topic, but IFC is frightful in the way it utterly offsets the harmonious composition of the original trinity of three tallest buildings in the hong kong skyline doesn't it? when i first saw renderings of it in 00 i was appalled they'd build it. and hongkong's movies aren't quite the same as before. its a different hongkong these days, for better or worse.

why is BOC popular? maybe because it's a one-of-a-kind skyscraper unlike any other in its form.... because it was HK's first 1000 footer.... because it's one of IM PEIs greatest masterpieces. pretty much no-brainers.

.......

2ifc is awesome as well but i don't think it's very unique. pelli recycles this same design in the goldman sachs tower in jersey city... plus the skin isn't very unique.

I've been to Hong Kong and seen both buildings.

I really like BOC, but 2IFC made the biggest impression on me. It's just this huge and solid building that's nailed into the ground and the design is very nice...

My vote goes to 2IFC...

BOC is definitely what I think of first when I think of HK. It's design is really unique. How tall is it, and how old is it? And the 2IFC? I like both designs, maybe 2IFC a little more.
