There was supposed to be a long-term expansion project of the Soekarno-Hatta Airport to the north involving a third runway and a possible new terminal because of a potential surge in passenger numbers. I heard this expansion plan was rejected by the Tangerand Municipal Government because it is claimed that the residents living near the airport wouldn't be able to provide income to their families. It was probably decided that a second airport be constructed for the Jakarta area, but that would require a thorough study. The second airport would probably be located around Cikarang and Karawang.

yup, you got the point. But Karawang Airport plan is still under feasibility study. The most possible advantage is the new Kertajati Intl Airport which still under construction will be second airport hub for Jakarta+West Java region.

The reason why our country tend to be declining, is due to the fact that troublemakers tend to be given more excuses and compassion, compared to those whose are in need of solution.

Bear in mind that the area surrounding Cengkareng airport was once ricefields, not a single urban area existed.

They only began to pop up in late 80s.

sorry, but the feasibility study of KIA has been completed last year, even the land for its location already available, the only problem of this plan is West Java Govt approval and its RUTW (general planning of regional spatial layout), and they will change it only in 2017..

HLP is only focused on domestic destinations and CGK has 'too much' domestic traffic and has probably still 'space' for international flights.

Jakarta plans inter-airport link

New express link to connect Halim Perdanakusuma and Soekarno-Hatta airports

Quote:
Jakarta is now served by two airports

The Indonesian government is planning to develop a new rail link connecting Jakarta’s two airports.

The city’s Halim Perdanakusuma Airport opened to commercial flights last week, to relieve congestion at Jakarta’s main airport, Soekarno-Hatta.

And while the redirecting of flights to Halim Perdanakusuma is only intended as a temporary measure, the government believes it is necessary to connect the two airports by rail.

Indonesia’s Antara news agency reported officials as saying that the route will connect Halim Perdanakusuma Airport to Terminals 2 and 3 of the Soekarno-Hatta, via Cawang, Manggarai, Tanah Abang, Sudirman and Pluit. This will allow passengers to connect more easily between the two airports, without having to battle the Jakarta traffic.

Jakarta is currently finalising plans to develop a brand new airport, which is scheduled to be completed in approximately six years’ time. Once this airport is open, Halim Perdanakusuma will resume is operations as an air force base and a hub for business jets.
