The whole of Australia has been conditioned to think paroachially by state politicians. It is a type of 'divide and rule' game. This seems to be the way of the world, its happening in Europe again over Euro membership.

^ so so true, no one place in Australia is significantly more or less parochial than any other IMO. It can be state vs state, city vs city. hell even Geelong has a huge chip on its shoulder about Melbourne....and they are essentially the same place. Same with the rural NSW cities and Sydney.

Cul, it's seriously embarrassing for you to go around saying that 126 Philip St is better than any building in Melbourne. Or that World Tower is a better resitower than, say, Republic Tower.

Avatar, Melb towers may be better than Sydney towers from a design perspective, but this lot of tower is still damn ordinary IMHO (same with most current skyscraper projects around the world for that matter - but of course that's a gross generalisation!)

Livinia makes me feel positive about Melbourne!

2. FWP1 - 205m - MELBOURNE
3 = Verve 501 - 170m - MELBOURNE
= Meriton Tower - 170m - SYDNEY
5. Westpac/KENS - 166m - SYDNEY
6. E&Y Plaza - 165m - MELBOURNE
7. SX Tower - 163m - MELBOURNE
8. RDT - 162m - MELBOURNE
9. Lumeire - 151m - SYDNEY
10 = Aspect - 150m - SYDNEY
= Urban Workshop - 150m - MELBOURNE

Certainly is for now - even with the rest of Austrlalia added it still has six of the top ten under construction though I think this will change dramatically over the next few years with projects like Soul, Vision, Skyline, Domain starting. I know there are two in Perth as well as some in Sydney too.

This list will look very different in a year or so.

1. Q1 Tower – 322m – GOLD COAST
2. Eureka - 297.3m/351m – MELBOURNE
3. Circle on Cavil North – 219m – GOLD COAST
4. Aurora – 206m – BRISBANE
5. FWP1 - 205m – MELBOURNE
6. Verve 501 - 170m - MELBOURNE
= Meriton Tower - 170m – SYDNEY
7. Westpac/KENS - 166m – SYDNEY
8. E&Y Plaza - 165m – MELBOURNE
9. SX Tower - 163m – MELBOURNE
RDT - 162m - MELBOURNE

yeh but Q1, Eureka, FWP1, E&Y, SX1, RDT, Aurora, all wont be U/C by then, they will be complete.....so the list will be very different to that, Grollo or Cull i'm sure u can give a proper list of the top 10 U/C's for July 2006......

are there any plans for 180m+ scrapers to be built in the centre of the CBD? that is the area that needs to be filled! Will Milano/ Verve501 fill some of that void?

There are strict height restrictions along Swanston street and the surrounding blocks in the CBD... it would take a design of the utmost quality (and good reason!) for this restriction to be overturned. Thus, the only really large buildings that can go up on Swanston are those outside the Hoddle grid (eg: Milano and Verve501... which from the south will definately go some way to filling the gap... but not a huge amound considering outside CBD).

Personally, I think this is going to create a very interesting feature in years to come, as the height and density of construction in the CBD around Swanston gets beefed up... you are going to have a beautiful sunny and open space right through the centre of the CBD as opposed to canyons through the rest. Cool

true sakor, well said, it would be something different compared to other major cities round the world to have an open sunny space right in the heart of the cbd while everywhere else their are major scrapers all over over.

I think its good that Melbourne has become more picky about what designs are allowed to be built now, i dont think we have to be reminded about the Holiday Inn over the yarra, or the old Gas&Fuel buildings.......

its hard to say what will be actually UC a year from now? some big ones might all of a sudden commence, while others that should start are delayed.
but ill give you an indication.

projects over 150m-

height with spires

SYDNEY-
33 bligh st-219m (roof-188m) (supposed to start next year)?
167 castlereagh st-188m (supposed to start before xmas)
Meriton-170m
Lumiere-151m
Aspect-150m

MELBOURNE - not sure if any big ones (150m+) are set to start 2006.
Verve 501- 170m

GOLD COAST
Soul-240m
circleoncav-219m
circleoncav-158m
PERTH
swan pano1-207m?- scheduled to start 2006
swan pano2-192m?-scheduled to start 2006

BRISBANE

Vision-246m (280m if spire approved)
not sure about many petrie bight towers)?
Aurora will be completed by July.
Domaine-177m
skyline-160m
brissy sq-151m
-----------------
in order-
bris/Vision-246m (280m if spire approved)
GC/Soul-240m
GC/circleoncav-219m
syd/33 bligh st-219m (roof-188m) (supposed to start next year)?
pert/swan pano1-207m?- scheduled to start 2006
pert/swan pano2-192m?-scheduled to start 2006
syd/167 castlereagh st-188m (supposed to start before xmas)
bris/Domaine-177m
syd/Meriton-170m
melb/Verve 501- 170m
bris/skyline-160m
GC/circleoncav-158m
bris/brissy sq-151m
syd/Lumiere-151m
syd/Aspect-150m
So as you can see by the list melbourne has just 1 x 150m+ skyscraper uc next year. NEQ will be the new king with 7 of the 15.

I'm positively surprised by Melbourne's skyline for a while, it's already in the world's top 10 IMHO.

With that in mind, are there any vacant blocks in the northern part of the grid that could be potentially used for large towers? The only two that I can think of are the old CUB site, and the massive waste of space which is the Vic Market car park. In saying that, I recall some forumers mentioning campus style plans for these parcels of land. That would be a shame. Melbourne is running out of large empty spaces to build towers on the scale of Eureka and Rialto, and soon we will realise that these sites have been wasted on low-rise, bland boxes.
