Image Posting Guide

Image Must Be Online

To post images in the forum they must be hosted on a website and then properly formatted into your post. Images residing only on your computer can't be posted or uploaded to the forum unless they are put online.

Popular sites which you can use to host your images are ImageShack, Flickr and FreeImageHosting. If you have images on your computer and want to post them in the forum then use one of these websites to host the images. If the images you want to post are already online then there is no need to do this.


Get The Image's URL

When the image you wish to post in the forum is properly hosted on a website then you need to get the URL of the image. The URL of the image is the exact web address which the image can be found at. Don't mistake the URL of the webpage the image appears on for the URL of the image.

To get the URL of an image do this:
- in Chrome: right-click on the image and select "Copy image URL"
- in Firefox: right-click on the image and select "Copy Image Location"
- in Internet Explorer: right-click on the image, select "Properties", highlight the Address field and press Ctrl+C

After this the image URL will be held in your computers clipboard.

This is an example of an image URL:

Post Image Using IMG Tag
Now you are ready to put the image into your post. Use the IMG tag to do this. You can also click the button which is available above the text area when you write your post. Press Ctrl+V to paste the URL from the clipboard.

The image URL must be enclosed by the IMG tag like this:

[img]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3c/NewYorkCityManhattanRockefellerCenter.jpg/800px-NewYorkCityManhattanRockefellerCenter.jpg[/img]

It is also necessary to properly credit the source of the images that you post. The image we are using here comes from the National Institutes of Health via Wikipedia (link) so we state them as the source.

The final result is:

Additional Notes

When posting multiple images you will want to separate them with a blank line so that they do not appear cluttered together.

Post like this:

[img]http://example.com/image1.jpg[/img]

[img]http://example.com/image2.jpg[/img]

[img]http://example.com/image3.jpg[/img]

Not like this:

[img]http://example.com/image1.jpg[/img][img]http://example.com/image2.jpg[/img][img]http://example.com/image3.jpg[/img]

Some websites or photographers do not allow you to post their images onto another website. Posting images from one website onto another website is called hot-linking and is not always a respectful thing to do. Before posting images from another website look to see if there are any strict copyright notices or any other messages that indicate that the owner of the images or website do not agree to their images being used in this way.

An image with a URL such as C:\Windows\Documents\skyline.jpg will not work because it is hosted locally on a computer and is not accessable to others via the web.

The ability to attach images or other files is not available in the forum.




Here is a tip.

If you want to test to see if your image host will allow you to post images in the forum, change the query string on the end of the image URL.

The query string comes after the image filename in the URL. For example in this URL: http://test.com/image.jpg?blah
the query string is "blah".

So if you had an image URL: http://test.com/yourimg.jpg
when you post it in the forum type: [img]http://test.com/yourimg.jpg&blah[/img]

By changing the query string of the URL you will force your browser to reload the image, rather then using a cached copy of the image. That is the problem with posting images from other websites sometimes is that if they do not allow hot-linking, you may not be able to tell because you are viewing cached image, while the other forumers won't be able to see the image at all.

This can get a little tricky with image URLs from some image hosts. Sometimes there is already a query string in the URL. If this is the case then just add "&blah" to the end.

For example, if the URL is something like this: http://test.com/gallery?id=1234
change it to this: http://test.com/gallery?id=1234&blah

Now of course all these URL's I have been giving as examples should be enclosed in [img] tags when you make your post. This way you will be able to see if the image is loading up or not.

And be sure to PREVIEW your post first, no sence in posting if the images do not end up being visable.

I just posted my first picture! I am doing it through Imagestation.com for now. I guess my pictures will be in a hot link as opposed to being seen in your thread. Can I change this? Is this a good or a bad thing?
