MANCHESTER, UK: Beetham Tower (171m)

This is the tallest building currently under construction in the UK, and the first real "skyscraper" to be built outside London.

It will be 171m, with 47 storeys of mostly residential space.

The architect is Ian Simpson and the developer is Beetham, both of whom have been involved with numerous other tall buildings in cities around the UK including Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle. They are planning a 70-storey residential tower for London that will be 215m.

Here are renderings of Beetham Manc, and some recent construction pics (thanks to caw123 for these). As you can see, it's about two-thirds of the way towards topping-out.

I love it...Manchester will have a great skyline in a few years with a few more 150m+ going up.

The UK skyscraper boom isnt just in London.

Here's how it compares to the other proposed, u/c and completed towers in Manchester: http://www.skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?11477019

Quite a big increase above the current tallest (CIS Tower, 118m).

I do think its less than two thirds the way towards topping out though.

They have just recently go to the overhang....and if you look at the renderings...the overhang starts less than halfway up.

EDIT:
Just had a look on the official site...in the news section it has a story...

"Manchester Tower reaches level 23, only 24 to go."

it's 114m exactly.

171 x 2 = 114m. good guess will!

they mean floors complete though, if you look the core actually is about 30 floors high.

It's not 114m, the floors heights are not consistent throughout the tower.

In the renderings the cladding looks terrible...but seeing it in reality i really like it.

It usually the other way around...in the renderings the cladding looks amazing, but in reality its looks crap.

great looking building for manc

Looks somewhat Australian/NYC- but that's probably just the impression I get from the construction dynamics/slab design.

I like the form (simple as it is) and proportions, but I think the cladding will not age well. Much like the browns of mod/international style have rarely held up over time, these blue hues and frosted "ices" are already played out imo.

But it's a nice addition to a skyline that will surely grow leaps and bounds over time.
