Damn you Mancunians! You have that Beetham tower intruding into every heritage view of your city and it still gets built. In Liverpool, if someone fixing a TV aerial to one of our heritage buildings might be able to see one of our towers, it has to be reduced by at least ten storeys. How do you keep English Heritage quiet?

We tell them to **** off!

No, seriously, tall buildings are not allowed anywhere near the town hall. That is the rule, and it's mainly stuck to. The rest of it, well, we're not a World Heritage Site are we, we lost out on that nomination to you. We pulled down most of ours anyway in the Industrial Revolution to make way for factories and warehouses, so there is not much left except for Victoriana.

Because Manchester has a skyline similar to a war-ridden wasteland, what is there to protect?

I love Manchester, honestly.

Actually, Liverpool is a WHS for its 19th. and 20th. century buildings. The city does not have many buildings built before 1800.

The thing that has got the Liverpool forumers angry lately has been EH's decision to oppose a 38 storey tower on the old Central Station site because it would 'dominate' the Ropewalks area. In fact, the Ropewalks consists of mainly 19c. buildings that until quite recently were completely dilapidated.

We are restricted to towers in three distinct 'tall building zones' but even proposals in these areas have been rejected.

The Beetham tower, however, represents a step change in height for buildings built outside London. It dominates the city far more than any of Manchester's other tall buildings. Can't wait to see the Eastgate tower go up or the new one in Minshull Street.

Actually, english heritage are working on getting manchester a world heritage site title.

Manchester was the world’s first industrial city. Work has begun towards putting forward a nomination for World Heritage Site status. The city has now transformed itself into a lively cosmopolitan centre with the largest number of theatres outside London, museums, galleries, and a busy nightlife, plus a bustling city centre with unrivalled cuisine and shopping.
so in the future we'll probably be seeing similar problems that liverpool is seeing now.

Thats because there ie so much under construction. Not because of bomb damage which is more appropriate to London.

Never. The cladding is different above the cantilever as can be seen in the latest pics. I'd say another 3 months before the building is externally complete.

I disagree with you there reignman. The type of facade gives it more character. Why have a state of the art building, or in Machester's case, a new high rise that'll be the pinaccle of a cluster that has virtually no character? This type of facade is elegant and sweet and doesn't scream too much attention but actually complements its surroundings. Compare this to any other modern day building, you'll see the other building is plain and simple and doesn't say nothing about its use and architecure.

I only hope more and more buildings adopt this kind of skin if you will for thier high rises to give more strength and personality to the building.

Some pictures from Christmas Eve from vertigosufferer....

Remember, those white sheets behind the glass will be removed when the building is finished.

Sometime mid 2006. Cladding and the blade should be done within 3 months.
