In that skyline photo you can hardly see it's there from all the reflections.

7 World Trade signs first official lease

7 World Trade under construction earlier this year. It opens next year.

It's official: 7 World Trade Center has its first tenant. Developer Larry Silverstein announced Thursday afternoon that the New York Academy of Sciences has signed a 15-year lease for 40,000 square feet of space in the new, 1.7-million-square-foot tower at Ground Zero that's may open otherwise empty in the first quarter of 2006. The academy's lease takes up the entire 40th floor of the 52-story tower. Academy president Ellis Rubinstein participated in today's announcement, which can only be seen as especially good news for both Silverstein and his tower. Before today, the only inkling of a lease in 7 World Trade came from Ameriprise Financial Inc., formerly part of American Express. The financial firm is reportedly close to leasing 20,000 square feet in the tower, but no official announcement has been made.

AMERIPRISE RENTS 7 WTC

January 5, 2006 -- Developer Larry Silverstein leased about 20,000 square feet of 7 World Trade Center to Ameriprise Financial Inc., the second tenant for a building that began offering space two years ago.

Ameriprise, a Minneapolis-based securities broker spun off by American Express Co. in September, will lease half of the building's 39th floor, Ameriprise and Silverstein Properties Inc. said. Terms weren't disclosed. Bloomberg

Only if they rebuild the twin towers will the entire building be leased.

Who wants to look out the window at a hole in the ground?

Everyone wants to see tall buildings, so just rebuild them twin towers.

Right?

Out of all the NYC newbies, either completed last year or now under construction, this is my least favourite. It's horrible.

I was thinking that too. Most of the new buildings going up in NYC are steel skeletons for some reason. I don't get it.

Not only for new building construction.

There are a few main reasons a lot of steel is used in the construction of skyscrapers in the U.S..

1) To support the steel industry (historically the U.S. one)

2) For scraper construction, it's quicker and time is money.

3) Also historically the construction industry in the U.S. has had a large mafiosa infiltration. The mobs preferred the use of steel re point 2.
