Flying the World : Toronto - Hong Kong AC A340

Flight report by "G-VXXL" from HKADB :
DATE: APR 30, 2005
FLIGHT NUMBER: AC15
ETE: 15hrs 35mins
AIRLINE: Air Canada
EQUIPMENT: Airbus A340-541
REGISTERATION: C-GKOM(952) (2nd time fly on the same plane, hope I can fly 951 for AC16 in Aug)
CREW: CPTx1 F/Ox3 FAx16
OCCUPANCY RATE: 100% Full (for both Y and F class cabin)
SEAT: 24K

DEP. AERODROME: CYYZ/YYZ (Toronto Laster B. Pearson Intl)
TERMINAL: Infield Terminal
GATE: 524
ETD: 0945
ATD: 1011 (Push back, very interesting reason for the delay, see below)
RWY: 33R
TWY: Gate-EY-E-D-33R

ARR. AERODROME: VHHH/HKG (Hong Kong Intl)
GATE: S43
ETA: 1320
ATA: 1340
RWY: 25R
TWY: 25R-A5-A-W-H-H7-Gate

CRUISING LEVEL(FL): 320->340->360->350

OTHER INFORMATION/COMMENT:
-As an aviation fan, I like using the infield treminal since I can look around the apron on the bus. 8)
-Touch-screen PTV is amazing! You can have different views of the flight status, see pictures below! :o
-FA made PA and said that the delay due to 1 pilot caught in traffic on the highway.
-A340-500 has 4 levels of flap extension, we used flap3 during take off at CYYZ. Rwy length is 11,050ft, we used up 4/5 length of the rwy for the take off run. 8)
-We had pretty strong tail wind over north Canada and Alasaka, which made our Ground Speed up to 1061km/h.
-I think we hit the jet-stream over Japan, winds were not stable, changed from tail wind to head wind, seat belt sign turned on for quite long, about an hour.
-I like this seat. Although it's close to the washroom, it wasn't that noisy since there is an equipment storage separated seat 24H/K and the washroom, so you won't smell the washroom....LOL.... Also, no matter how you move your seat backwards, you don't have to worry about destrubing the passengers behind you, coz there is no pax. 8)
-Still, AC service is bad, no smile at all, no professional customer service at all.
-Pilots are so nice. After arrival, I first asked the FA to visit the cockpit, he refused, I went to ask the captain, and he said "sure! come on in!"
-Crew are going to stay overnight in a hotel in Wai Chai for one night, leaving on the next day as AC16 back to CYYZ.

AC A321 Parked at gate 122, Terminal 1

At the Infield Terminal, you could see the An-124 parked at the Infield Cargo Terminal

Here we go, A345 for AC15 parked at gate 524

Still early, no many people in the infield terminal

My boarding pass

Hey guys, notice this A320, let me tell you what happened(it doesn't really shown in the pic):
this A320 is wearing OLD body colour scheme (white), but NEW tail colour (Greenlish white)!!

We are pushed back at 1011LT, 26 mins after ETD, delay due to pilot is late.

The An-124 and the 727F which belongs to All Canada Express.

Another An-124 is parked at the De-icing facility.

Entering rwy 33R. Note we used Flap 3 for today's take-off.

Position & hold. The new T1 is under construction.
]

OK. Take off run!!!

Rotate!

Bye Toronto, see ya in August.

Snack one
]

Let's try the PTV!!!

First main meal (w/ Salmon salad)
Choice 1:

Choice 2:

Dessert: Ice cream

Nice view over Northwest Territories, Canada

The PTV is awesome!! You can choose different map views, this is like the map in FS, I can actually touch (touch scree) the red arrows on the four sides to move the view. Here I moved see a close up of Hong Kong!!

Flying over Northwest Territories, Canada

Nice view of snow mountains

Pretty strong tail wind, our ground speed is 1041km/h!

Leaving the coast of Alaska

Cup noodles

Let me show you the different map views:

Globe view:

Day/Night view:

Time zone view:

Follow plane view:

This is excellent: the Flight Information page

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just for laugh! Two map views: FS & PTV

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
............shh...

Snack again!!! woo-hoo

While I was clicking around the PTV, it was frozen!! .....errrr.......I told the FA and she reboot the computer for me.

Inflight magazines + safety card

Second main meal:
Choice 1: Salmon w/ rice

Choice 2: Chicken w/ rice

Flying over Taipei.

A rare map view. Don't trust the yellow flight path on the screen, it is the great circle direct flight path, not our actual flight path.

Descending...

Everyone woke up. Windows are opened. We are ready to land!

PTV's are switched off, let's see what's outside. Holding at 4,500 ft.

Arriving rwy 25R...

Ladies & gentlemen, welcome to Hong Kong...

OZ722 taking off at 25L for RKSI

Other traffic

Parked @ S43

The Hong Kong - Toronto route is Air Canada's only route with PTVs. They received their first A340-500 last year and only started flying this direct route on August 1, 2004. I believe this is AC's only plane with PTVs in all classes.

Air Canada's website currently lists 2 such aircraft :
http://www.aircanada.com/en/about/fleet/a340-500.html

However, a press release from last year indicates there may be 3 in total :
http://micro.newswire.ca/release.cgi...3213-0&Start=0

Air Canada will take delivery of two Airbus A340-500 aircraft this summer (2004) following successful negotiations with the Air Canada Pilots Association (ACPA) to facilitate the expedited introduction of the ultra long range aircraft to Air Canada's fleet. Air Canada has been operating daily non-stop service eastbound from Hong Kong to Toronto since December 1, 2003 using Airbus A340-300 aircraft.

Those 340's will be on their way out as 777's replace them.

nice report !! the A345 is truly an amazing plane, from a passenger's point of view, definately more quiet than the whining twins of 777.

Nice pics. I love T1! I just hate the Infield Terminal so much. We were delayed a few weeks ago in my flight from Heathrow, and had to land there instead of T1...

AC just got these new jets. Why would they be phased out a year after they came into service?

How is it that you get to travel so often? Like spending half of the year in Toronto and the other half in Hong Kong. I envy you

Well, let me put it this way. There is a good reason why we have three daily flights to HKG from YYZ. I think Air Canada is a nice airline, but I like to fly Cathay Pacific for the political reasons.
