The Actors Studio is set to open a new space in the centre of KL. Rosheen Fatima gets the exclusive story on the new space, the promise it holds, the drama factor and what it means for the local theatre scene.

On the night of February 28, as the audience members were tearing up, a small crowd gathered on stage. Made up of those who have played a part in the life of the Actors Studio @ BSC, those whose careers started on that very stage and those who helped it grow. With actors, dancers, singers, comedians, technical crew and previous staff mashed together on the stage; the emotional tension in the air was palpable. The audience became hushed as Dato' Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham stepped forward.

Clearly holding back tears, Faridah pushed the microphone towards Joe, and headed backstage. Joe thanked everyone for coming and told us to 'go home'. I didn't leave, how could I? I remembered each and every show I had watched in that space, and if I - someone standing on the sidelines, watching the event play out - was upset, those who had graced the stage in the past eight years must have been heartbroken. An era had drawn to a close, The Actors Studio @ BSC was no more.

(Yeah, I know, a bit dramatic right? But theatre is nothing if not melodramatic, and isn't that what we love about it?)

Now two months later, another adventure looms on the horizon for Faridah and Joe. The talks are over, the plans have been drawn, the location selected and as you read this, the new Actors Studio is in the midst of being built on the rooftop of YTL's Lot 10.

Since the closure, TAS received about nine or ten serious offers from various parties. Joe and Faridah chose to go with YTL's offer, with Tan Sri Francis Yeoh as the driving force behind the plans. Having worked with him before on KLPac, the two had faith in the partnership because, according to Faridah, 'he understands what Joe and I are about. You do not make money from theatre. He already knows this and he trusts us to do what we do best. We've never said we want to do it for our own glory. We want to do it for the glory of the arts, and I think that's a message Tan Sri understands.' The team of Faridah and Joe, Mr Lau Eng Shinn - Operations Manager of Lot 10, Yuhkichi Kawai - Chief Executive Interior Designer of Design Spirits, Teoh Ming Jin, Ian Chow and Ang Yue May from KLPac, went through many meetings debating the look, feel and details of the new theatre before deciding on the final design.

The TAS @ YTL's Lot 10 space ups-the-ante on what Malaysian arts spaces can be if given the chance. The new space places the audience far closer to the action than the local arts scene is used to. 'We were limited in Bangsar, because the design was already there, whereas this one we started from scratch. This one is much more dramatic and extreme. And because we are working with Japanese designers, we are going toward a very minimalistic feel,' Faridah explains with Joe adding that, 'I came up with the idea of having an extended Hanamichi style stage. It's from Japanese Kabuki theatre, which makes it three-sided.'

A Japanese design, the Hanamichi stage in the new theatre will have a wide 'catwalk' extending from the centre of the background of the stage, giving it a 'T' shape. 'It's very dramatic, the space. So, some directors may have to be more creative in their thinking to be able to stage a play there. It's very challenging, and why not? If you are in the arts, this is what we want. We want to be challenged, because otherwise it becomes boring, right? So I'm sure people will want the challenge,' Faridah explains, 'It's intimate, their spit will fall all over,' she laughs.

Clearly excited for the new era in the life of TAS to begin, the two describe the differences that TAS @ YTL's Lot 10 will have compared to their previous spaces in Dataran Merdeka and Bangsar Shopping Centre; from the cushioned bench style seats, allowing a bigger audience in a smaller space, the decision to allow drinks into the theatre, giving the audience a more enjoyable experience, and the extremely high ceilings.

More accessible than any of their previous spaces, Lot 10 has the Bukit Bintang monorail station directly outside the building. Certainly a boon to many performing arts enthusiasts, 'Lot 10 is very grunge and middle class, and the acting fraternity is very middle class, and a lot of them need public transport,' says Faridah.

Affected, as we all are by the depressing state of the economy, Joe says that, 'this year and next year, the word to theatre practitioners is 'think cheap'. While we ourselves are willing to support with the venue and discounts, we ourselves have got to think cheap, because there is no money out there. We have to find ways of putting on shows, where we can have a win-win situation.' Yet the future seems bright for TAS, with the Lot 10 makeover also including a gymnasium, a pub and a restaurant, ensuring that the audience will come in droves.

Scheduled to be opened in the third quarter of the year, TAS @ YTL's Lot 10 promises to add life to an already bustling city centre.

Thumbs up: Yeoh (fourth from right) together with guests on stage at the
new Lot 10 that is set to bring more energy into the Bukit Bintang area.

WHAT was formerly a concrete carpark area has been transformed into one of the most refreshing and soothing venues to the eyes and soul.

In a 360 degree turnaround, the rooftop of Lot 10 is now a sight to behold, with the well-manicured lawn and trees and the abundance of greenery that aptly lives up to its tagline “Forest in the City”.

The landscaping, unveiled recently during a press conference at the Teez Brasserie on Level 8 of the rooftop, is part of the Lot 10 new positioning project which aims to appeal to a new niche market.

StarMetro had earlier carried a story entitled “Chic Mall for The Young” describing the refurbishment and renovation work and concept the popular mall was undergoing.

At the press conference, YTL Corporation managing director Tan Sri Dr Francis Yeoh spoke to the guests on the new age of relevance that young urbanites can expect once the mall is refurbished and launched in October.

“From what was a useless, underused concrete rooftop, we have uplifted it into a proper jungle,” said Yeoh.

“Our target population, whom I refer to as the Greenagers of the new generation, are into fitness, health, and good life,” he added.

The rooftop view is breathtaking as one could look down at the city skyline and traffic below, amid the foliage, shrubs, plants and overhanging ferns.

The Rooftop Fitness Club is already in operation since March, where fitness buffs could work out at the all-glass facade studio. It is open till midnight every night.

The ever-popular Actors Studio theatre will open here too, near the Fitness Club.

Forest in the city: The manicured trees and well-landscaped rooftop has
transformed from what was previously a car park to a Forest in The City now.

Covering 8,000 sq ft and conceptualised with a Zen-like minimalist interior, the 250-seat theatre has the country’s first and only Hanamichi T-shape stage inspired by the Kabuki tradition.

The Actors Studio founders Datuk Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham who were present looked pleased to have found their new home here after the closure of their premises in Bangsar.

Also housed at the rooftop is the Teeq Brasserie, a modern and chic restaurant offering a fine selection of lighter fare in Japanese, Western, Asian and Thai styles.

The avant-garde decor has undulating waves of wooden ribs encircling the ceiling with an all-glass facade that affords a beautiful view of the city.

The Rootz Dance Club, Yeoh said, would soon be the new pulse of the city. Designed in Baroque-style intricacy drawing inspiration from the architecture of Russian museums and palaces. Yeoh said it promised to be a happening dance venue.

“This is a nightclub that will be clean and drug-free. It is a place where I can feel secure knowing where my children are,” said Yeoh.

Plans are afoot to introduce acts to showcase the best in local talents as well as to bring in deejays like DJ Sam Young who has been a staple of the London club and social scene for over 10 years. “This mall will be a real hive for the young. We have exclusive brands as our tenants like Chic by Nicky Hilton and William Rast by Justin Timberlake, while National Geographic would be opening its store here. too.

New joint: The modern and trendy looking Teeq Brasserie that serves a fine
selection of lighter fare in Japanese, Western, Asian and Thai styles.

“The National Geographic stores in London and Singapore are very successful so we’ve managed to get them to also open one here in honour of the Malaysian National Geographic alumni,” said Yeoh.

Also exclusive at Lot 10 will be Debenhams of Britain, which will be bringing a new wave of Cool Britannica to Malaysia with its award-winning store and brand concept across three entire floors - the largest in the country.

Yeoh said a new WiMAX Centre in collaboration between YTL e-Solutions and Samsung Electronics was set to position the mall as the first in the country to offer converged mobile Internet services and offering guests the power of connectivity from the rooftop right to the basement.

“Through our mobile interactive stores, we want to also provide mobile Internet at affordable prices for every Malaysian in near future,” he added.

Also to open is the Shabu One Steamboat Buffet Restaurant (counterpart of Jogoya at Starhill Gallery) that will offer the first of its kind marathon steamboat buffet with over 200 kinds of seafood and ingredients.

Long-time tenant Isetan, whose first and original home is here at the mall, is undergoing renovation and will soon introduce a new concept of its food market.

Also to look forward to is the world’s first heritage gourmet village called Lot 10 Hutong, whose renovation is by multi award-winning architect and designer Yuhkichi Kawai from Japan.

Located at the basement level, culinary traditions will be revived and Malaysia’s best-loved food stalls will be here to whip up local favourites.

It will feature 27 restaurants and kiosks against the backdrop charm of olden-day pushcarts and sedan chairs that are reminiscent of rustic lifestyles with modern alleyways.

Celebrity chef and food critic Chua Lam, a respected foodie in Hong Kong and China, will make his celebrity appearance here on Nov 10 as he is said to be impressed with the Hutong concept.

Guests that evening were entertained with a fashion show by Zang Toi, violin performance by Dennis Lau, a performance by Actors Studio, and food sampling from Teeq Brasserie.

To celebrate its launch in October, Lot 10 will be having 10 days of celebration starting Oct 10.

Lot 10's upmarket hulk has sat on Jalan Bukit Bintang for two decades, its plastic-dark green more style-statement than vital. (Remember those odd metal palms in the interior?)

That's changing, though: the place is undergoing a complete renovation, in an attempt to net today's health- and environment-conscious urbanites. Hopefully, the repositioning - masterminded by multi-award-winning architect and designer Yuhkichi Kawai, of Design Spirits, Japan - breathes new life into the old place.

Lot 10 owner Francis Yeoh hopes his new "Forest in the City" will be an "urban microcosm of fitness and health", a place for consumers to pursue "the good life with responsibility".

On Lot 10's brand new roof, trees (real, this time!) sprout, ferns overhang, and new amenities beckon to KL's "Greenagers" (as Yeoh calls them):

1. Rooftop Fitness Club

This all-glass-façade gym is already open. It remains open until midnight daily, providing stressed-out city dwellers a KL-skyline backdrop to their health regimens. A studio offers aerobic dance, Pilates and Thaibo.

2. The Actors Studio

After the closure of their space in Bangsar Shopping Centre earlier this year, The Actors Studio's founders Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham have found a new spot for their stage. The minimalist 8,000-square-feet, 250-seat space will feature Malaysia's first T-shape stage - think Kabuki, or a fashion runway.

3. Teeq Brasserie

A chic establishment serving light "Japanese, Western, Asian and Thai" fare - ideal for a post-workout or post-play snack. Featuring an undulating, wooden-ribbed ceiling, all-glass façade, and avant-garde décor. Also available for catered functions. Opened evenings Tuesday to Wednesday, Teeq also serves lunch on the weekends.

4. Rootz Dance Club

What's a roof without a dance club? Set to feature the work of celebrity DJ Sam Young, it'll also seek to showcase the best in local talent. This Baroque interior-ed nightspot is designed to host events ranging from live-singing or jazz-band performances to fashion shows and brand launches.

Lot 10's revamp will also feature a new combo of high-end commodities:
- In April 2010, UK concept store Debenhams arrives in Lot 10 with a 3-floor premise, one-upping its previous outlet at the Curve
- The mall's long-running Isetan will get a face-lift
- Clothing lines like Nicky Hilton's Chick and Justin Timberlake's William Rast make their appearance
- A WiMAX Centre offers converged mobile Internet services
- Shabu One Steamboat Buffet offers a range of 200 different ingredients to drop into your boiling pot. (Watching out for promotion prices from 12-19 Oct)
- Lot 10 Hutong is "the world's first heritage gourmet village" - which means it's a swankier-by-degrees food-court of Malaysian eats. Playing host to 27 restaurants and kiosks, it'll offer stuff like Ho Wing Kee wanton mee, Kong Thye Singapore noodles and Mo Sang Kor bak kut teh. (Apparently, the place is so impressive that its opening will feature apperaances by celebrity chef and food critic Chua Lam.) Here's a peek of Lot 10 Hutong:

Plaza Low Yat to evict tenants convicted of piracy
Written by Bernama Monday, 18 October 2010 15:47
http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/busin...of-piracy.html

KUALA LUMPUR: Plaza Low Yat will evict tenants convicted of piracy in support of the government's anti-piracy initiatives.

Its general manager of property management and operations Michael Lee said the proactive step would complement the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism's Anti-Piracy Campaign launched in May last year.

"This initiative is putting action to our commitment of being a 100% genuine information TECHNOLOGY (IT) mall.

"We are glad of the support from the ministry as well as software giant such as Microsoft," he said at the announcement to continue its partnership with Microsoft to fight piracy here on Monday, Oct 18.

Lee said even though Plaza Low Yat was the first IT mall in the country to have such an initiative, he hoped it won't be the last.

"We are calling on all malls in Malaysia to join us in this fight against piracy," he said.

General manager of original equipment manufacturers for Microsoft Malaysia Low Sin Yip said based on International Data Corp research, the value of the piracy market in Malaysia was worth US$453 million (RM1.4 billion) per year. — Bernama
