New Constr Series of Westin Peachtree

Here's another series I recently scanned. Shot from a PTC tower looking west. Note in the first few pics all the other construction going on in the background as well.[IMGhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v338/jfsatlbldr/Westin%20Peachtree%20Plaza/Series%20from%20ENE/202.jpg[/IMG]

very cool
such a strange hotel

in the background .....the black tower u/c is the one on Marrietta that always seems to be changing owners.

Two blocks to the west (right) are the buildings that became CNN center.
So the atrium was added after the buildings had been there for a while?

The atrium was always part of the project. The roof was installed near the end of construction of the 4 sections. It connected the 2 office towers, the hotel and the west end which was an entertainment center then called 'The World of Sid and Marty Kroft'. When built the complex was named 'The Omni International'. The roof covered a public mall like concourse including a nearly hockey sized ice skating rink with a bridge crossing over the middle. I have a complete construction series of that complex as well which I will post sometime later.

The Westin Peachtree is not STRANGE!

Joe, do you have any shots of the 70s funk interior?

Amazing construction process on the Westin Peachtree. I actually find that most tall buildings look more impressive when they are under construction than when they are done. Kind of like when you were a kid waiting for Christmas morning. The anticipation of the toys was probably better than actually opening them.

It's hard to believe that the black tower on Marietta was actually built by somebody, because hardly anybody has wanted to locate in it since then! That part of downtown has really changed in the last 30 years.

I do not mean strange in a bad way. Most round hotel towers are awfull. Portmann made this one work with good location and bold hight. When it was compleated it dominated the skyline witout overpowering it.

I wish I had a picture of room decor that I found in the penthouse suite in mid 90's when I was hosting a party for Hotlanta.
The whole hotel hre-renovation it was a tad on the weird side.
Lots of shinny things and everything looked as though it were hosed down in Pepto bismo.

The renovation in 1999 really spruced things up. It's a class act now.

Thanks guys for all the nice comments. I have a lot more of this building under construction but it takes a long time to scan and edit the old slides to prepare them for a series like this. I will try another one of WPP sometime later on but for now I'm working on organizing several series of 1180 Peachtree and some other towers. Would anyone like to see any series' of Centennial Tower or the CNN Center under construction in the mean time?
