Less cars in China than the US, but it's increasing rapidly, it is getting ready for another round of booming.

Those highway are prepared for the future. China keep on developing highway, in 1988, China only began to build all these highway, the first highway is only 15.6km long but in 2000, it is 19000KM long total. Because in the future, everyone in China will own a car for sure. And China keep to plan for the future is to keep building new roads and highway.

H2O powered cars are becoming more and more popular. All this 'petrol will never run out' attitude has got to stop.

Well they are brand new so I hope they look better, the US Interstate system was also brand new at one time but things get old. In 50 years China will be faced with the same problems as the US trying to maintain an old system.

Singapore has the most ingenious highway.

On one of the city's highways, a very wide, tarmacked central section divides the lanes of coming and going traffic. (They have 4 lanes each side I think). There are no metal barriers flanking the outer edges of this central this area, but within the central area there are scores and scores of large temporary boxes filled with plants and flowers.

In the event of an emergency at Changi International airport, within a staggering FIFTEEN MINUTES, all those planting boxes can be removed AND the highway can be completely cleared of traffic so that a plane can land there!

Brilliant.

Good for China, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Has anyone been on (preferably driven on) Chinese highways (between the cities)?

What's the experience like in terms of:
1. skills and courtesy of other drivers
2. traffic police and speed limits
3. roadside breakdown and rescue?

It's been many years since I've been to China but there were motorways then in Sichuan and Shaanxi in mini-buses and big buses. I remembered them as being very light in traffic -- the drivers were all professionals since few consumers had cars -- so they were fairly safety conscious. I have never seen a traffic cop on the motorways.

But that was then. What about now?

1. skillwise, highly skillful, then can squeeze through a crack that is barely 1cm wider than the vehicle itself. The number of lanes changes depending on the traffic flow, so a 2-lane way can easily morph into a 4-lane way during the peak hours.

courtesywise, NONE whatsoever. The world is out for your grab, go for it.

2. traffic police only cares about fining you, and you can negotiate your own fine with the traffic police so that he can pocket it himself. Speed limits is around 55-60km an hour.

3. roadside breakdown is frequent, and yes, they hold up traffic often. Rescue? Don't count on it.
