The evolving Beijing Subway has four lines (two above ground, two underground), with several more being built in preparation for the 2008 Summer Olympics. There were 599 bus and trolleybus routes in Beijing as of 2004.
That's not very much for a population of 8 million in Urban, and 17 million in the metropolitan area.

And how clean are Chinese cars? (CO2 emission per km?)

most chinese cars are EUR 3 standard, it's relatively clean.
shanghai has 1000 bus lines, each bus line is 15-25KM. maybe shanghai has the largest bus routes network in china.

Chinese cars are pretty clean. I know that Chinese new-auto fuel economy standards are higher than US federal standards. Most pollution in Chinese cities is actually not caused by automobiles -- Beijing's smog was equally bad during their car-free days.

There was a thread where this Chinese freeway has brightly colored tunnels. Does anybody remember where that thread is?

er...the title of this thread is just annoying, it instantly gives people a negative feeling towards China, no matter how impressive the highways might be.

It's one more reason for opening a new thread. The other (more obvious) one is having already 704 (more than 500) posts.

I've heard there's already a motorway all the way from Beijing to Kazakhstan. That's an enormous distance through sparsely populated areas. Is it true?

Well, my map says there is a full expressway between Beijing and Baoji, via Shijuazhuang - Taiyuan - Xi'an, and under construction between Baoji and Zhangye, via Lanzhou - Wuwei, then again a full expressway between Zhangye and Kutyun via Hami - Turpan - Ürümqi - Shihezi, and then again under construction between Kutyun and Huocheng at the Kazakh border.

It wouldn't surprise me if the expressway is finished all the way to Kazakhstan.

^ I've seen a map somewhere (I can't remember where, but I think here in SSC) with the whole length finished. Of course the map could've been wrong, that's why I asked.
