This expressway is at approximately 3600 meters above sea level. I suspect this may be the highest motorway-standard road in the world, though La Paz has a substandard motorway at 4000 m altitude.

And I believe they will build an expressway (As they call the motorways) that will climb up to 5130 meters above sea level! (At Tangula pass).

BTW, where is the transcription to latin alphabet?

Thus, freeway equals Asian expressways. (Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, etc)
So we can consider Iran being more European than Asian!
In Iran Freeways called Azadrah (Free Road) and are part of a seperate network and Expressways are called Bozorgrar (Great Road) which are part of national highway system and municipal roads

Taken from posts by Nakata on the bridges sub-forum.

These are expressway bridges from Xinjiang, western China.

The environment looks like something from Austria/Switzerland/Bavaria...

I would say it's G30 Lianyungang-Really far away expressway*. The Westernmost part of the expressway is already open.

* I know, it's the Lianhuo expressway, Lianyungang-Horgos, Kazakhstan border.

I wonder what the traffic volumes are on G030 in Xinjiang. Apart from the Ürümqi region, it wouldn't surprise me if it's barely 1,000 vehicles per day. That area is extremely remote.

Actually I mean the same road, but there seems to be some confusion between Google Maps and Google Earth road data.

It's the closest China motorway from Europe (about 8000 km from Ljubljana) and looks like pretty spectacular, Chris, any plans for a video or two?

EDIT: funny, in Google maps I can plan trip to Chinese Border, but not over it - also not over Russian border. All other borders seems to be "passable".

If there weren't any bad roads, corrupt police officers or border controls, you could drive to China in about 9 - 10 days from Europe. Doesn't sound that far actually. It would be epic to do that some day.

Then try G7 when it gets built. It will run from Linhe-Bayan Mod (marked in Google Maps as Wuliji Sumu)-Ejina banner-Gongpoquan (At the very end of Gansu S216 road, some 80 km North of Mazongshan which appears in Google Maps)-G30 Southeast of Hami. It will run 1000 kilometers through nothing! (Well, almost nothing)

The part of Western China where they are building this road is about as close to Moscow as it is to Beijing and China's east coast. The Ürumqi area is the place on Earth that is most distant from any sea. Such is the vastness of China (and all in one time zone, mind you).

In terms of your epic journey, there are relatively straightforward railway connections from Western Europe to Moscow (1.5 days), then on to Almaty (4.5 days) and from Almaty to Ürumqi (2.5 days). So on the road, 9-10 days sounds about feasible provided that the roads are in a good state. Until Moscow is just about doable. Just how bad is the trip from Moscow to Almaty? Or would it be easier to take a more southerly approach via Kyiv and Volgograd?

There aren't a lot of good east-west routes in western Kazakhstan. I think an entrance into Kazakhstan in the north may be better, driving via Astana to Almaty and then into China.

Any idea when the G42 Hurong Expressway (Shanghai-Chengdu) will be completed? At some point I would like to travel it end to end, since it will be the longest existing 42 in the world at 1960 km (at least until Asian Highway 42 becomes "real," presumably awaiting the completion of G6 to Lhasa).
