Plus the Iranian regime and legal system are not exactly something most people want to be in a position to confront themselves with.

And you have also to cross many difficult borders, while only few on the route Russia-Kazakhstan-China.
Other options are Russia-Mongolia-China or Russia-China directly.

EDIT:

China:
9,700,000km2
1,337 millions of people
85,000km of motorways
1km of motorway for every 114 km2 of land.
1km of motorway for every 16k people.

Italy:
300,000km2
60 millions people
7000km of motorways
1km of motorway for every 43km2 of land
1km of motorway for every 9k people

So, Chinese motorway network is less huge than it seems.

If they mean expressway with G number, then it's possible because there are a lot of expressways built within a certain province that's part of the national highway system and administrated on a national level. The exclusion is mostly aimed at city ring roads and one off provincial projects that's not really connected to any national network, which is rare.

That's true, although a calculation like this is too simplistic. Area-wise, you need to mainly consider just eastern China, whereas population-wise you have to look at density (again, in the main populated areas).

It is exactly as huge as it seems. It's like saying that Russia's land area isn't as huge as it seems because the population density isn't as high as, for example, England or the Netherlands.

Considering China's small GDP per capita and the fact that the western half of the country is essentially uninhabitable, the motorway network is still pretty impressive.

Animation of the Yaxi Expressway (part of the Beijing-Kunming Expressway), pics of it is in posts a few pages back. An engineering project of epic proportion.

Not exactly. Iran roads in the area near Turkmenistan is good since there is Mashhad there. Lots of tourists go there every year.

Looked through the posts - and this absolutely crazy... The amount of expressways the Chinese are building in a month is I guess the same Russia is doing in a decade..
They should stop in several years though, otherwise they will have "white elephant roads". Really, this thread is also a good example that the Chinese economy urgently needs rebalancing towards consumption

How easy is it to consume when you have no decent roads? China is doing the right thing: building infrastructure which will then serve for consumption, export and all other economic activities. You can't consume if you don't have necessary infrastructure to do that.

Updated map of Chinese Expressways?

Where I can find an updated map of Chinese expressways?

Beacause here in Europe i haven't find yet a complete and updated map, probably beacuse the network is expanding very rapidly.

I think this map on Wikipedia should be really updated.

In my experience Google Maps has the most up-to-date mapping of China. They usually only lack the expressways that opened within the past 6 - 8 months.

I don't know about Chinese mapping services. Yahoo maps is severely outdated and Bing Maps is entirely useless.

75,440 km is the size of the USA's interstate highway system, but are China's expressways well-distributed?

Is there a Google maps link to the location of this highway 'loop' available?

I think it's here, but the road isn't on Google Maps yet.
