Agree. To me it must also have a sense of history and a feeling that it's been there forever. The European ones are way better than anything in the rest of the world. I really like Brussels but fell in love with Leuven. What a work of art!

Madrid City Hall is beutiful, but very small, so it is being changed to a new place.
The old one is "Casa de la Villa":

It is situated right in the center of the city, in "Plaza de la Villa", near Mayor st. and Mayor sq.
The new one is this building:

It is one of the most known buildings of Madrid, the "Palacio de Comunicaciones" (communications palace). It was built in final XIX century, and its the best example of Madrid's Modernism arquitecture. The architect is Antonio Palacios and it was as the HQ of the Mail and Telegraphs company of Spain. It will be the oficial site of the city hall in 2 years, now it is being adapted for that, and the internal court its being covered for making a public covered square. It is Situated in Cibeles Square, right in the junction of Recoletos and Prado walks and Alcalá St.

European city halls definitely top the world on this one. Not only are they nice buildings, their settings are also very vibrant, such as in the town centre surrounded by other nice buildings and squares. Both functional and elegant.

Some random pictures from the city hall of Rotterdam the Netherlands, it was build between 1914 and 1920 and was one of the few buildings that have survived the bombings. It is now a momument and was cleaned with special methods in 2000 ( this as needed because the heat from the bombings dried out the stone )

a early desgin from 1911

A picture of the city hall cleaned

a picture where you can see how dark it used to be because of the heat

The entrance

the small tower on top
