WTC, NYC

Very symbolic, as mentioned before.

the WTC twin towers! international style at its absolute finest.

aon's a close runner up, followed by transamerica pyramid. the rest are decent, but not exceptional.

i hate with a passion the wtc. its without a doubt some of the bland and boring corporate architecture around and look at it at ground level - hideous. the only thing about it was the height, if it were half the height would anyone have ever liked it? i dont think so.

I've always felt the WTC twins were in the wrong location. When they first went up, they clashed horribly with the gothic and art deco buildings of downtown. Plus they were right at the edge of the river. I, and most New Yorkers, really disliked them. However, after the WFC went up on landfill, and the North tower got its antenna, I begrudgedly accepted them.
Same for Montparnasse. Skyscrapers do not belong in the central city of Paris. But I've always kind of liked the building itself.

The International style is probably one of the worst things ever happenend to cities. It is probably the capitalistic answer to the commie blocks lacking any sense of style. Those buildings are purely devoted to get the most out of the ground they're built on. It is the environment and the people living in it who have to pay the price for the incarnation of ugliness.

That's why I agree with gothicform. If the WTC had been a plain 200m skyscraper nobody would have ever took note of it.

I don't buy that at all, you could say that about alot of towers. Would Trump World Tower be as recognized and liked if it were shorter despite it's simple design? How about the Empire State Building, if it were shorter, would be as popular?

Height was a factor that made the WTC famous, everyone knows this, them dominating the skyline, neighborhood, street the way they did is what made New Yorkers and everyone like them, that was one of their most powerful features.

Also, what do we consider and judge for "best" skyscraper? Is it purely architecture and aesthetics? Everyone knows the WTC went beyond their minimalist form.

With all respect to the Sears Tower, gotta go with the WTC...

Transamerica does it for me.

Although as a Torontonian I would suggest that Commerce Court West is a far better 1970s skyscraper than FCP - it's a little shorter, but much cleaner lines for a 1970s modernist tower.
