There seems to be a new video posted on the Tower Grand website, showing some modified renderings, 3D flyover and an aerial video of the Grand Arcade (well, made sense for them to actually put something on there!) which at least shows its not completely dead in the water.. although still a long shot

Just some bit of news:
* The Swimming Baths is well into demolition now (not had chance to take pictures) with the road between it and the Town Hall boarded off (to be pedestrianised once works completed) and the listed building to its left is also boarded off to allow both the new Library and Swimming Pool to be built.. it should be a big change to the town ![]() * The Council flats are well into their 'renovation' works, with 2 completed.. the blue and white rendering is not a good look IMO

This is old news (June) but Tower Grands well and truly dead the business and housing developments are being wound up and all modus shopping centres are up for sale.
If I remember correctly the shopping centre made a small loss last year because of its heavily discounted opening rates but it only has two vacant units despite the recession, less than its ever had since opening. |

a photo gallery of the demolition of the swimming baths and library buildings for their replacements, saves me a job of going taking pictures of it happening. Also, to give some perspective - a virtual tour of both schemes Last edited by ferge; September 27th, 2009 at 04:43 PM. |

I'm going to try and update the O.P of this thread later tonight, as I'm finding lots of interesting stuff on the planning department...
Just stumbled across this, a model of the Eckersley Mills site masterplan - which I mentioned a year or two ago. Last I heard it is still active in some sorts. The thing that caught my eye the most is that there is a high-rise element (I've counted 15 storeys on the elevations) - it could be that, now the Grand Arcade tower has hit the dust, that this could be, if approved, the tallest building proposed for Wigan. desperately trying to find a bigger version!! ![]() and an aerial of the site for clarity. Furthermore, the site to the top right of that aerial is the First bus depot, who are moving out to a new proposed depot by Martland mill near the DW Stadium, meaning this site too will be open for development - all going well, recovery and all that, this side of Wigan could be mighty impressive! I like how theyve reoriented the baths and done a tunnel under the town hall for it.

I'll try and get some pictures of it one day when I'm going into work, it'd help if there were more double deckers on my bus route so I could get a top-down view. The swimming pool site is one deep excavation site a the mo

The council have set up two webcams, one on the north site (where the childrens library was), and one on the south site (where the swimming baths used to be).

14/11/09 I hadn't fully realised how big the Library (North Site) is (the right webcam shot) this will make a pretty decent space then when the steps and paving part is added to the Weind space, pity that massive Head sculpture isn't permantly staying there. The South site shows what I was saying the other day about the depth of the excavation (suppose it isn't hard to do seeing as it was a pool, mind! So glad these are happening and watching the neysayers get angry that more change is a coming to their town

It is a real pity however that the Modus tower isn't going up next to the Pool, and the other Modus residential/retail building proposed where that ugly, white concrete Council building is, it would have resulted in the entire East side of the Town centre being rebuilt. Not too bothered as long as something prominant is proposed and built on the tower's site, which I imagine the Council will push for given they based most of their Unitary plan around it!

Perhaps we should start an official under construction thread for the life centre so we can post regular webcam shots.
The sites even larger when you consider the equally sized Town Hall plot in between the two with the new underpass going through the centre of it. Last edited by WatcherZero; November 14th, 2009 at 03:23 PM. |

I might PM one of the mods to have the thread changed to 'WIGAN | Full Summary of Developments' or something along those lines, it annoys me its just 'Wigan', as if nothing is going on
but yes, perhaps a seperate thread for the construction shots.
