ja studiram marketing a trenutno i radim.

Nice, very nice. Can you snap a few pictures of Ante Starcevic Square, it doesn't matter if it's not finished yet.

Thanks Esseker. We are all very happy to have you here because most of us either represent Zagreb or the Croatian coast from Pula down to Dubrovnik and we are always interested in Osijek which is one of Croatia's most beautiful cities.

We are always asking ourselves if anything new is happening on that side of the country. So its cool that you can fill us in on any news that you hear.

Most of us post information that we hear and you can also find project news about other Croatian cities located here as well which you may find of interest. Just click on any of the names below for a link to those discussions .....

Split Rijeka Zadar

There is also the general Croatia Discussion

Pozdrav

Jos malo nocnog ugodjaja grada na Dravi

I za kraj najlijepsa goticka katedrala Hrvatske......zagrebacka katedrala je mocna, velika i djeluje dominantno, dok ova osjecka mi je nekak vise skladna i stilski dotjeranija - kompaktnija

I believe this cran is located either on Eurodom's site or Esseker centre.

@esseker, if you have a digital camera, is there any chance you could do some shots of the 'secesijski niz' in Osijek (Europska avenija) ? I have read it is the European longest row of houses-buildings built in secessionist style.

I cant believe they destroyed such a nice garden to build the stadium. The Stadium they really could have built elsewhere in Osijek. I wish they would reconstruct it in a new location with all of the out buildings.

how old is the Cathedral? That building is so beautiful

you know what it reminds me of (also in Vienna ) The Stephansdom, which is 900 years old! So yeah, how old is this one?

This one isnt too old, it was built in the 19th century - it's one of the youngest religious objects in Osijek

hehehe ok

is it older than the Zagreb one? The Zagreb one is 1899, which is the "y" in "19th Century," . It's probably older.

But boy, they keep Osijek EXTREMELY clean! those facades are all immaculate! Cleaner than the Swiss facades! And my mom says it's extremely clean also.

Nah, i dont think those facades in Osijek are too clean, here and there still can see scars of the war on some buildings But I am happy that a lot of renovation has been done in 'Osjecka tvrdja'

There's still some evident war damage on facades in particular to those of detailed sessionist buildings which will take time from craftsmen to repair. What can you expect when the Serbs had Osijek under seige from 3 sides and then used their usual tactics to ruthlessly destoy it. Even that beautiful cathedral sustained damage from being targeted.

Anyhow the Zagreb Cathedral is gothic and neo-gothic in origin. Its original spire collapsed in the Zagreb earthquake of 1880 and was rebuilt to the current design of twin skyscraper spires. It ranks as one of the tallest in Europe.

The Osijek catherdal is also tall but is a late 19th century structure which fascinatingly is built of bricks.

Guys Zagreb Cathedral is very old, about 900 years or more, it was built in 1080's something, only front section (and spires) of the cathedral has new looks, as old one collapsed in Earthquake of 1880, but most of it is from way back in 1080's.... If you visit the cathedral you might get a official tour guide he might know much more... But when took tour it was explained to me about earthquake and where they added new parts (1886-9) ones and so on... Actually Cathedral in Zagreb could be oldest such church in Croatia... Cost most cathedral where built after 1400 hundreds...

How come Varazdin hasn't got a cathedral and Sibenik and even Hvar do ?

Cathedral in Split is the oldest one. It was built 1700 years ago. At first it was mausoleum of emperor Diocletian, but in 8. century it was turned into cathedral

Mick, i'll try to answer. Cathedrals are caracteristic for dioceses. Varazdin has been a diocese only since 1997 and has has a bishop since 1997. Until 1997 Varazdin was directly under Kaptol in Zagreb. Now Varazdin has a cathedral since it's a diocese which is from architectural view a common church. Why has Kaptol been a Catholic center over the centuries i don't know.

that's very nice :)

well guys I must admit I'm plesantly surprised with your knowledge about Osijek and the interset you show.

So before I get out there with my camera and give you a real update, here are some facts and figures about Osijek...

First, the "Gradski vrt" park was distroyed after the WW2 but gradually. I gusess like many things at that time that were not "in the spirit of communism".

Europska avenija street is some 1 km long but about 500 meters of that is sourrounded with beautiful old parks and the rest are the secession style buildings. Those buildings were built in the late 19th and early 20th century at the time of a fast economical rise. The town's council decided that all houses in that street must have front gardens and that's also what makes them look so nice.

Osijek's Cathedral, I must disappoint you, is only a parish church but because of it's size and the fact it was built by bishop Strossmayer who is an Esseker, people call it cathedral. It was finished in 1899 (if I remmember correctly). It's built in a neo-gothic style in the place where an older baroque church used to be. It's spire is 90 meters high. At first they stardted to built it to the hight of 100 m but it kept collapsing so they had to satisfy with 90 It is made of fasade bricks and the edges are made of lime-stone. In the last war it was havily damaged but today you can hardly see that damages. I even have a pice of the spire on my desk!
Every friday at noon it's bells remind us of the defete of the Turks.
