First, the "Gradski vrt" park was distroyed after the WW2 but gradually. I gusess like many things at that time that were not "in the spirit of communism".

Europska avenija street is some 1 km long but about 500 meters of that is sourrounded with beautiful old parks and the rest are the secession style buildings. Those buildings were built in the late 19th and early 20th century at the time of a fast economical rise. The town's council decided that all houses in that street must have front gardens and that's also what makes them look so nice.

Osijek's Cathedral, I must disappoint you, is only a parish church but because of it's size and the fact it was built by bishop Strossmayer who is an Esseker, people call it cathedral. It was finished in 1899 (if I remmember correctly). It's built in a neo-gothic style in the place where an older baroque church used to be. It's spire is 90 meters high. At first they stardted to built it to the hight of 100 m but it kept collapsing so they had to satisfy with 90 It is made of fasade bricks and the edges are made of lime-stone. In the last war it was havily damaged but today you can hardly see that damages. I even have a pice of the spire on my desk!
Every friday at noon it's bells remind us of the defete of the Turks.
hehe cool thing about the bells

can someone tell me about the trams in osijek? which ones run currently, and what are the tram plans for the future?

Trams in Osijek are about 25 years old and most of them are Tatra ones like in Zagreb and there are also a few Duewag's. At the moment the eastern part of the network is being reconstructed. The west par in Retfala quarter has been reconstructed a few years ago. the tracks on the main square are new . In 1990 tram network started to expand to the south but stopped after just a few hundred meters and we are still wayting. There are plans to continue what was started and to bring trams to the Jug 2 quarter where only busses operate.

here's a pictuer of the part of main square that's finished

here's a detail from the seccesion row

There had been some plans to make Tvrdja a Student's town with colleges and schools... After the new campus was started, some wanted to make Tvrdja into a public institutions quarter but what ever they decide I belive Tvrdja should continue to look like on this picture to be opened to everyone! On this picture you can see this years highschool graduets celebrating the 20th of May after they danced the Quadrilla dance for the Guiness book of records. If you look closely you can see the statues on the Hooly Trinnity Pillar have been renovated completely (all of them).

Look at the pillars carring overhead electricity wires. Even waste baskets look classy. Are they chromed, i like chrome. Looks good

90 metres is very high for the 'cathedral'. Impressive height

I love all that session architecture and any restoration is excellent.

Interesting about the midday bells. Quite a tradition considering its still carried out today.

Otvoren HITRO.HR u Osijeku

Actually, the Cathedrals bells ring every day at noon but on fridays they ring longer so not many people know that.

I haven't heard anyone call the Holy Trinnity Pillar "kuga". Maybe some do becose like in many other centraleuropean towns there are such pillars that were erected to give thanks for the end of the plage epidemy. The one in Osijek was erected by a woman who wanted to save a memory of her husband (I think). All 8 statues are cleaned and fixed but I don't know when they will clean the central pillar.
In Pozega there is also a Holy Trinity Pillar, It stands on the main town square. It is interesting to know the town payed the builder 300 forints and 2000 eggs! that was in 1749.

an update

they announced that the fasade of the University's Headquarters will be renovated in a way to show the lost details again. Since it's construction in the 18th century that building was renovated a few times but it was not done correctly so many nice details of the plastics were lost.

update no2

I took a look at the Rijeka and Split forums and I saw you talked a lot about light rail system and a possible new tram network there. Last month there was a congres Opatija about city-suburbuian rail traffic. They talked a lot about Osijek there.

In 1984, Osijek was the first town in Croatia where "town railway network" existed. The line went from west to east with connections to the south 30 km to Vinkovci, 10 km north to Darda and western to Bizovacke Toplice. Unfortunately war ended development of that network but according to the congress in Opatija Osijek might get it's local rail network back.

At this time 28 trams and 40 busses don't help to reduce traffic problems so a new Public Transport Company might be founded where trains would take much of the towns and suburbian traffic. According to calculations a one way ticket would cost only 3.5 Kuna and it would be valid for all 3 ways of transport (today tram/bus ticket costs 6 or 7 Kn, and train ticket for 10 km costs 8 kn in one way)

In the near future the line from Hungary to Bosnia that passes thru Osijek (C-5) will be electrified so that will make town train traffic even easier. At this time the Public company (GPP) only carries more than 10.6 million passangers per year.

Here's a picture of the current DMU's that operate locally:

Thats great to see they are considering a central transport body for Osijek which hopes to put in place an expanded tram and suburban train network.

Also the rennovation news on the University is great. Osijek has a large fantastic inventory of sessionist buildings.

up to date

here's how Suncana ulica (Sunny street) looks now. Soon it will become a pedestrian zone only, in half way from the main square and main train station.

The Ekonomski faks building is in good shape. The old part of it overlooking the square was renovated a some years ago and this year 3 new big halls have been finished. When I get free time I will take a few pics of it too.

In Osijek there are only 2 tram lines. Throughout history the town was build along Drava river so the tram lines follow that shape. In 1990 a new extention was started towards south but is still not finished. Still the authorities announced that it will also extend to the south-east. We all hope it will soon

Here's the tram and bus network map:

RAZVOJ JUGOISTOCNOG DIJELA GRADA - DIVALTOVA DOBIVA LUKSUZNE STANOVE
Urbane vile donose luksuz u Divaltovu

The future of the Grand Entrance to the "Gradski vrt" sports complex

This is the picture of the Grand entrance to the once beautiful park "Gradski vrt". The building once hosted the only Town Dancing Hall in Croatia which had a dancing hall, restaurant and a confectionery.
In front and in the back a big seccessionist park spreaded untill 1945 when town's government suddenly "forgot" about it. The park was destroyed and on it's southern border the Osijek's soccer stadium was built. The "grand entrance" was havily damaged in the last war but it's reconstruction can not start because the town is not the owner any more (!).
Hopefully the construction of the new stadium will begin in the near future(you saw the photos earlyer) and replace the ugly grey concrete stadium. It will be nice to connect the old and new architecture It is interesting to know that untill 1926 a tram line existed here and that was the southern line I mentioned that will be built (soon?).

Here's the photo of the stadium now.

It must be 1200 euros, but it's probably still a base price.

Thats weird. In Zagreb, horse tram ran on 760 mm gauge, when it got electrified they widened the gauge to 1000 mm because 1435 was too much, almost double.

Imagine it before the WW2. That must have been really nice. Some day i'd love to see the old pictures of Gradski vrt at its' peak.

I'd love to see old photos of those gardens. Such a pity they are now gone.

Interesting stuff on those new housing developments for Osijek.
