Kyiv, Ukraine. Part-2.

There are many galleries of this city in EE section, but it's not just a copy from there, these are new, fairly fresh pics. For more, visit the EE section "your city" part and there's a sticky with all cities listed.

A better view of the "motherland statue" a-la statue of liberty, Kyiv-version. It's taller than the new-york one

Kyiv Shevchenko University

"Golden Gates" they're partially original and partially reconstructed. Originally built in 10th century and partially destroyed in 1240 when mongol hordes invaded the city. That's when Ukraine fell under it's first occupation.

Mariinskyj Park, with part of the Mariinskyj Palace visible on the front and in the background is Ukrainian Parliament, known as Verhovna Rada.
Note: since December 2004, Ukraine is Parliamentary-Presidential Republic, which means Parliament has more power than the President.

Bell Tower of Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra. Which is a Monastery founded in 10th century. The actual Bell Tower is over 100m tall and was historically the tallest object in Kyiv.

The actual monastery is famous for it's numerous caves/tunnels underground, where mummified famous/sacred/saint bodies are lying in coffins under glass and are magnificently well preserved. Among them is some Pope, I don't remember which one. Ilya-Muramets, and many Saints, no point listing them

Bessarabka Market ( bessarabia a region that is now known as Moldova. Traders from there used to do business in this place hundreds of years ago and hence the name of it now ). In front of it is Kyiv's second largest underground mall, known as METROGRAD.

Ukrainian Buddhists on Andriivskyj Uzviz ( one of the oldest streets in Kyiv, where it is believed Ukraine's main first millenia-new year celebrations took place )

Just an old mansion/building in one of Kyiv's downtown avenues.

The golden gates again

KLICHKO ( boxers ) brothers doing a beer commercial

Lavra Monastery again. There are dozens of Churches, statues, fountains etc.

This particular one was built to resemble Hagia Sofia of Constantinople/Istanbul.

Foreign Affairs building.

Saint Bogorodyci Church in Byznantine style. Built in 1031, if I'm not mistaken, I might be a few years off. Destroyed in 1935 by commies. Rebuilt few years ago, the Metropolite of Kharkiv spent several days measuring every detail of the Church right before it was blown up by commies, believing that Ukraine will be free of commies one day and the sacred Church will be rebuilt. Thanks to him it is reconstructed to every single detail now.

This is in Podil district. I don't remember the name of the Church.

Different angle.

Kyiv downtown

Metro/Subway station. Kyivan subway is one of the worlds most beautiful subways, possibly second only to Moscow.

Saint Nicholai Cathedral. In neogothic style.

Secretariat of the President on the left and on the right the famous Chimera-building. Which was built by an architect Horodeckyj for himself. He also built the cathedral above.
