Absolutely right, that 'Bollywood' acadamy awards ceremony should have been in the regional capital, it's only in Sheffield arena by default as we don't have one. Come on Mr Carter and the rest of the council. Get a move on with this.

I agree and an arena for Leeds should have been constructed years ago. It makes me wonder why Leeds did not construct an arena during the 1990s when other major cities seemed to have constructed theirs. Why have LCC dithered for so long for what is an obvious economic boon for the city such as increased hotel occupancy, people using retail, conferecing etc and I don't know but why can't they decide straight away considering there is already a 100% private sector plan to construct in Clarence Dock. Is there a 'Ministry of Avoiding the Obvious' at Leeds City Council and why have dozens of reviews taken place on this as the economic benefits are clear? Hope to see this start soon though however looking back on posts I cannot imagine a possible Ice Hockey team to be successful as wasn't that a small 90s fad sport in this country for arenas to use when they don't have any concerts on (unless someone has a different opinion). Should hope this would be an inspired piece of architecture as well avoiding some of the dull tin shed arena schemes of other arenas built in the 1990s.

good to see a bit of fighting talk from Andrew Carter. Yes, it is clearly a council priority, yes it should have been considered earlier, yes it is disappointing when regional rivals get the financial benefits of 13,000 people spending money on a day out in their cities, yes we have prime sites, yes we should bypass the bureaucracy and by god yes it needs building.

reality check. nothing that simple, but a strong drive from the council can only help.

Shows how much red tape there is to contend with when we need TWO lengthy and costly studies to point out and confirm the obvious!
I never understood why Mr Silverwood didn't just put in planning permission and get it built - why does 'council support' matter?
Also I have a nagging feeling 13,000 is too small. We're a big city, with good road & rail links and a vast population when you consider Wakey/Cas/York/Bradford don't have arenas. The big acts all seem to sell out elsewhere...

This comment really sums up the arrogance so often displayed by people from Leeds, and yet you fail to understand why people from other cities have such a low opinion of you guys.

So many times have I heard the words pretentious and arrogant used to describe Loiners, just last week I overheard a woman in Leeds train station say “Leeds nice city, shame about the people” Hmm I wonder why?!

I don't think thats true really; people in Leeds I find are friendly- and its nothing compared to the arrogance seen in Manchester and London, and the odd citizen from other cities.

Bit of a silly comment - what percentage of people do you think are as sad as us and give a sh*t whether Leeds is better/worse than wherever...
Most people just take cities at face value and don't compare the various infrastructure pros and cons!!!
I doubt whether many loiners could be arrogant about Leeds being better/worse than Sheffield, as they simply don't care!! They live here, it's a great city, they like it. End of story.
If Leeds had a suitable venue for the ceremony, it would be held here, just as if London had a suitable venue for the FA Cup final, it would be in London not Cardiff.

Its Yorkshire as a whole that has secured this bid. Yorkshire is not LEEDS, you know what am saying?

Even if Leeds did have an arena, I wouldn't be so cocky to say the ceremony would automatically be held in Leeds.

Oh here comes the, were the regional capital statements, its like a broken record

I really don't think it's the loiners themselves that give people a bad impression but more the people who are attracted to the city. Leeds after all has a large financial sector and so attracts the pretentious and arrogant.

No one from Sheffield could be accused of being cocky could they?

I don't see anything wrong with Rob's comment. It's more a criticism of Leeds than anything else.

I don't think I believe you Jackanory..........

Mind you, when I was in Sheffield last week I did "overhear" a "woman" in Sheffield train station say "Sheffield, nice city, second greenest in Yorkshire after Leeds you know?".

Or did I???????

Well yeah, but most cities have got 'it' in some way or another; and in London, Manchester and Leeds it is flaunted with hype- I dont think hype is as big in other cities but then again I dunno.

In addition, Leeds was the UK's sexiest city (aka not Sheffield) so that says it all. Sheffield is far too innocent and happy- its a bit like the Harvey Nichols advert thats in some magazines- seven sins of five floors (ie leeds is a bit daring, and has the edge to it seen in the rather naughty people )
