F1 Powerboat race set for Singapore return in November
By Patwant Singh | Posted: 10 June 2011 1839 hrs

An F1 Powerboat

SINGAPORE: Hot on the heels of September's F1 race, the waters at Marina Bay will come alive with high speed powerboats.

After a five-year absence, the F1 Powerboat race is set to make a splash at the Bay this November, making Singapore the second city after Abu Dhabi, to host both such races on tarmac and water.

The UIM F1 Powerboat race ended its run in Singapore in 2005 despite being a hit with fans. But it was a matter of time before the race returned to Singapore.

This time, it will take a slightly different format, called the F1 Nations Cup.

Scott Gillman, a four-time F1 Powerboat World Champion and one of the drivers for Team USA in the F1 Nations Cup, said: "There is 20 boats all built exactly the same, so they have the same boat, same engine and everything. So the competition should be very good because it is all equal, so it should be down to the driver."

The boats are less powerful than their F1 version but have similar acceleration coupled with lighter frames. Capable of hitting speeds of 200km per hour, the boats also use more environmentally-friendly engines and fuel. Eight teams, with two boats and two drivers each, will be competing.

Organisers are also hoping to get Singapore to field a team. The overseas promoter together with local representatives, are finalising the logistics and meeting the relevant authorities this week.

Boats will be launched from the floating platform, with the road between the seating area and platform used as the pit area.

The new contract is for three years, but already the organisers are looking to expand the number of races.

Raimondo Di San Germano, Business Development and Financial Director of H20 Racing, said: "It will be great to have two weekends, with Formula One, Nations Cup and why not Aquabike as well...we are looking at a water festival here in Marina Bay and Sentosa."

There are also plans to possibly leverage on this year's Singapore Grand Prix.

Zalinah Jantan, Managing Director of Maxit International, said: "Another thing that we want to do is to bring in boats earlier before the event, and maybe do displays to hype up the event."

The Singapore race will be staged on the November 19 and 20. It will be the second in the inaugural series this year, after Abu Dhabi in October.

The event will see four races over the weekend, each lasting about 45 minutes. And the organisers are expecting about 100,000 to 200,000 spectators to line the entire Marina Bay area and catch the high speed action on water.

Marina Bay Sands to put sparkle into local nightlife
By Ong Dai Lin, TODAY | Posted: 14 June 2011 0641 hrs

SINGAPORE: After a delay in opening and two lawsuits filed over alleged contract breaches, international nightclub brands Avalon and Pangaea look set to open their doors in Marina Bay Sands (MBS) after all.

While the two clubs did not give a specific date when contacted by MediaCorp, the Avalon website stated that it will hold the Avalon At Large, an F1-related party, at MBS on September 23 and 24.

Meanwhile, according to the Pangaea website, its club here will have capacity for 500 patrons and is now available for private bookings.

The efforts to make MBS' south Crystal Pavilion a much-touted nightclub destination look set to happen with American Gregory Gumo of Crystal Pavilion Marina Productions, the man behind the two projects, MediaCorp understands.

Avalon is famous in Los Angeles for being home to Hollywood celebrities and a venue for annual parties such as the Oscars and Emmys, while Pangaea is a party hot spot in New York, Miami and London.

Mr Gumo, the co-founder and director of the Fuel Festival music event held in Singapore during the 2009 Formula One weekend, had told an online interview with former Zouk marketing manager Tracy Phillips on inSing last year he had suggested bringing in the two names after a few nightclub brands were discussed but none fit the bill initially.

Mr Gumo, who is also one of the founders of Soundpedia, a Singapore-based Internet radio and music community website that was started in 2006, then flew the owners of the clubs to Singapore.

The news that the clubs will open soon, as MBS also stated on its website, comes as a twist in an ongoing legal action.

Last week, Singapore entertainment management company Kraze Entertainment filed a lawsuit against MBS for breaching a leasing agreement in April. The former had worked on bringing the two nightclubs into MBS and is alleging that MBS has wrongfully terminated a 10-year lease at south Crystal Pavilion.

Last month, Kraze Entertainment, which has ties with Korean company Krazetech, also filed a writ of summons against Pan Av Asia Partners, the clubs' purported operators, for "various material breaches" in agreement.

The collaboration fell through after Pan Av Asia Partners allegedly scrapped its licensing deal on March 25, resulting in Kraze Entertainment's own termination of its management agreement on April 9. - TODAY

LOUIS VUITTON CRYSTAL PAVILION

Now’s the time to dispel all the myths surrounding that “strange, odd-shaped glass structure” sitting along the waterfront at Marina Bay Sands. You might have concluded that it was Avalon or Pangaea, the two new clubs slated to open in the next few months that everyone’s been buzzing about. Some even assumed it was the ArtScience Museum before realising the museum was the colossal white formation next to it.

We’re pleased to finally announce that this crystal pavilion will house the Louis Vuitton Island Maison, a modern concept for the French luxury brand, only the first in Southeast Asia and 12th in the world. And instead of simply walking into the store, you now have the option of sailing right in on a boat.

(Yes, that’s pretty nifty, but you may have a bunch of tourists standing on the promenade gawking at you or clicking away on their cameras, so be certain you’re fine with fame first.)

Designed by award-winning architect Peter Marino, the ground floor will feature the complete selection of men’s and women’s leather goods, ready-to-wear, shoes and accessories while the mezzanine level is dedicated to travel luggage and accessories in the first Travel Room in Asia-Pacific. The nautical-inspired interior ties in with an outdoor loggia, which resembles a deck on a luxury yacht.

When you’re done shopping, proceed straight to an art gallery tunnel lined with contemporary works leading straight to the mall. How’s that for an extraordinary exit?

Louis Vuitton Island Maison opens to public on 18th September.

Singapore River Cruise adds MBS to its taxi route
By Sharon See | Posted: 31 August 2011 1619 hrs

SINGAPORE: From the Merlion Park, there is a faster way to cross the reservoir. Marina Bay Sands is the latest destination on the water route operated by the Singapore River Cruise.

At S$4, the journey from Merlion Park takes less than 10 minutes.

Visitors can also choose to board the river taxi from Grand Copthorne Waterfront for S$16.

This new route comes less than three weeks ahead of the opening of the Crystal Pavilions - one of which will house a Louis Vuitton store; and the other, international night clubs Pangaea and Avalon.

Louis Vuitton Island Maison opens on September 18, Avalon on September 16, and Pangaea on September 22.

"The Water Taxi arrives to us at a perfect timing. The opening of the Crystal Pavilions for us symbolises the final opening component of Marina Bay Sands. We're very grateful that the opportunity for our patrons to arrive via water taxi just means there is another easy mode of transport available to them," said John Postle, Executive Director of The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.

See Toh Yew Leong, General Manager of the Singapore River Cruise, said: "MBS is one of the most popular destinations around the Marina Bay area. We want to bring tourists and locals to the destination in the shortest and fastest time. During the transfer, they also get to do some sightseeing and enjoy the beautiful scenic view of the Singapore skyline."

Singapore River Cruise is a daily service that operates every 15 minutes from 9am to 10pm. Visitors arriving at Marina Bay Sands drop off at the North Jetty where the ArtScience Museum is located.
