Thanx for starting this thread Bambam!
More pics please!!!!
I've heard that the Gornja Rijeka Castle in Krizevci is being renovated by the owner of Hotel Bezanec. I hope he'll open another one of his restaurants there.

Castles around Osijek...

There are atleast 6 castles in and near Osijek not counting the villas, etc. Here are the pics of the one in Osijek's Retfala quarter that was once owned by the Pejacevic counts. It once had a big "perivoj" around it. During the last 30 y it was a hospital and now it is given back to the Church which owned it untill 1945. It is under major reconstruction.

And here's a better picture of the castle Eszterhazy in Darda on which the reconstruction started but needs to be continued.

Castle Opeka

The castle was built in the second half of 18th century by Draskovic familiy. The castle came into Bombelles's hands in 1852 when count Mark Bombelles married Ferdinandina, the daughter of count Franjo Draskovic who died five years later. Mark's uncle was married to Napoleon's ex wife Maria Luisa, the austrian princess. Castle was then reconstructed and expanded. Mark Bombelles planted an arboretum with plants he brought from his journeys. The arboretum has specimens of rare exotic trees from all over the world. It has more than 250 tree and bush species, among which the coniferous trees are especially valuable. Arboretum is spreaded on 64 hectars.
After the WW2, Bombelles familly dissapeared from the political, cultural and economical scene. In 1958, the gardening school was opened in the castle. When the new school building was built, school moved out of the castle which abandoned, was left to decay. In 1989. ruinous roof was removed, leaving naked walls to further decay. School has taken care of the arboretum as much as they could considering the lack of money.
Sometime in the last decade, the castle was returned back to Bombelles, but their last descendant formally disclaimed the castle in favour to Varazdin county. Vertain parties have shown interest in restoring the castle and arboretum for the purposes of elite tourism.

I've heard that some Russian investors are interested in buying and renovating Castle Opeka. Their plan is to open a hotel/spa there. It certainly is in a very bad shape.
My favourite castle in Croatia is Marusevec. It could do with a paint job. It looks so romantic, I wish they would turn it into a hotel, I would absolutely LOVE going there for a weekend break.

Damn, Trakoscan is so near the border with Slovenia, we should've invaded it while we had the chance, LOL.

Seriously, that is one sweet-looking castle..

Yes, those Russians were St. Petersburg's food-processing concern Colibri, but that was a year ago. Few months ago the county government has changed, new president is a former Minister of public works, development and civil engineering. He's also a co-owner of real estate and tourism ventures.

In the following weeks i'll post pictures of Jalkovec castle nearby Varazdin. It was restored complete with beautiful park by CEO of Vindija (strong food producing company, they won the golden prize for cheese at IFE fair in London).

I love Croatian castles, but I had no idea that Marusevec is such a beautiful castle. I agree, it could do with a lick of paint.

So far my top three are ......

1) Trakoscan - Timeless .....

2) Mailath - Magnificent .....

3) Marusevec - Glorious .....
