This building is beyond beautiful. It's going to put Chicago on the map like never before. Fordham + Trump . . . both completed by 2009.

This is a great time to be alive.

psst . . . Do I hear Olympic bells for Chicago come 2016?

I don't really like the design yet but I have a very good feeling it's going to look AWESOME when it's completed. It always seems that the real thing looks better than models or renderings. The models and renderings look ugly with this building but it will be much better in real life.

a drill
like something going through the earth from deep under.

Chicago can have a nice shot of winning the national candidature if the mayor allows it.

I agree with the Tribune writers that the current proposed base of the Fordham is far too pedestal-like in its nature, and would be pretty bland on ground level if constructed. It makes the tower seem like a massive statue, all removed and impersonal.

At any rate, I'm sure the final design will end up looking a bit different than the current renderings, if the whole project is approved and is able to find sufficient funding that is.

I'd expect the base to eventually be more original and inviting in its design, and for the top with its spire to be blended and rounded more, and to have a bit more structural height added with 115+ floors. (or maybe I just hope all of those changes will end up coming to fruition )

My only regret (and that's probably too strong a term) about this design is that the spire is disproportionately tall. I'd just as soon lose the spire.

Great tower...very unique indeed. I dunno if it fits into Chicago's architecture. However, I guess i'll have to wait till it's completed to see.

Well this is great news, and a perfect location, at the mouth of the Chicago river. As has been said, Calatrava rarely disappoints.!!. Now looking at the Elevation, Silhouette, this tower seem's "meaty", with three multistory elements, and an actual roof higher than Sears, and you say 500'+ of spire beyond that, Very cool for the city that is the birthplace of the Skyscraper.
And as far as it being too bright, artistic license with the rendering is obvious, even if this tower where clad with the pearlescent aluminum panels, Cesar Pelli used on the 777 Tower, would not cast this much light. And I think from the river mouth point of view, this tower would add great contrast to both, The Waterview, and the Trump International. All three receding down the river, in line, would be a great shot. And the AON tower is not far away, so its not stealing the show, (plus there are still many lot's in the area that will end up as sites for a few 50 to 80 story condo's.)

I just hope it has a touch more mass (like in the elevation shows) than the rendering shows, and I would love to see a close up view of the structural system.!!!!

I dont really like it much. Its just not unique! Its a nice design, but there are other ones designed by him with the same twisty glassy look. Meh.

Base needs work, its ugly. Spire too.
