Melbourne:130-storey supertall proposed

Early days yet, and the honour of announcing this should go to Melbourne forumer LIGHTNING~BOLT who spotted news on television last night. Channel 7 has carried exclusive reports for two days running of a $A2billion, 130-storey supertall proposed by a Chinese consortium for Lonsdale and Spencer Streets in the western end of Melbourne, on the site of a derelict and notoriously contaminated former power station. A very big, asbestos-filled site, where there has been rising public/media demand to have something done about it.

First TV report last night was sketchy, apparently, but announced this project on the theme that Melbourne' 92-storey, 352m Eureka Tower, now nearing completion, would not hold its 'tallest' title for long.

Tonight's TV news report had more detail, and a render! Those who saw it say it is an unconventional design, with a 'twist,' reddish-pink colour, 130 storeys, and height is anyone's guess, but most people talking well over 400m.
The $2billion project price, and Chinese consortium (unnamed) mentioned.

Needless to say, Melbourne forumers are going ape-shit tonight: many skeptics, a few optimists and other desperately hopefuls emerging, as is some debate on whether such a big tower will unbalance the central city skyline (shades of the former and defunct Grollo Tower proposal in nearby Docklands). There does seem to be some consensus, however, that something VERY BIG will and should happen here. The strongest point in favor is that Melbourne City Council is desperate to have someone demolish and clean-up this power station, a real blight and health hazard in city centre,
and the current developer-owner going into liquidation. The suggestion of Chinese money behind the project is also intriguing.

A few Melbourne Forumers asking whether Melbourne is ready for this, others saying, after Dubai, well, why not?

Below are pictures of the site, and the current failed owner's previous plan for a bizarre WTB on the site. STRESS: that tower render is NOT the new proposal. Docklands precinct construction and Telstradome stadium can be seen in the background of the first picture: both pictures lifted from other posts:

It really seems that Melbourne wants another supertall! I hope we will see renderings soon.

Guys that green thing is NOT the proposal. It's one from a few years ago that went bust.

it looks to be between 400m to 500m and 120-130 levels

Cheers

Amazing news... how many skyscrapers are there with more than 130 storeys? I can't think of any.

^I know. What I said in the OzScrapers thread:

I hope this is serious. I can't imagine such a "supertall" in Melbourne, of all places.

Yeah, the most recent one being the 560m Grollo Tower, if built it would've been the tallest building in the world.

It was actually past the proposal stage, all the design aspects had been approved, the builder just couldn't agree with the government regarding who should shoulder the cost of the building!

I want it gone, but not replaced with a super tall, to tall i say, plus if it's some freaky weird red flame skyscraper, maybe not too tall =\

A good 300m sized scraper would do me. 450m+ too tall right now.

But if it is going to commence building around 2008-2010 it might work, as long as the rest of the CBD has bulked up a bit and gotten a few more 200m+ scrapers.

My $0.02 anyway

Hey, we're not THAT backward, Peter The: actually the local property press is beginning to dismiss the TV reports on this proposal, but something may yet emerge. The site is just to the left of this picture, 'of all places.'

Although that picture is digitally edited in photoshop :P

Realestate.com always enjoy adding in their own skys... and making the trees look a bit 'better' (if not faker) to appeal to would-be apartment owners. But that apartment till has a good view =D

EDIT:

The Bates Smart proposal for a supertall in The Docklands.

The Harry Seidler designed Grollo Tower proposal.

The better DCM designed Grollo Tower proposal.

KSIG tower (green one in the first post of this thread)

And now this new supertall, all have been based around the docklands (exept KSIg and this, witch is on the old power station site, just cross the trainlines and your in the docklands)

Just a few taller ones that have been proposed in Melb before.

(cheers The Collector for the info in This thread)

Also this on skyscraper diagrams... for some of the propsed taller ones.

agree some thing this size takes decade
again belive it will happen just a step closer
given the lead time that it takes by the time ground is broken
Melbourne will be more than ready
