It might be cheapper to cool (let say) a 700 apartments tower compared to 700 separate homes, but the biggest advantages is that in Dubai all the new buildings use "District Cooling" which reduce dramatically the need for A/C.

This technique means using chilled water circulating in a pipe network to cool the building. There's a central plant where the water is chilled and ice is stored and a network of pipes conecting it with the different buildings it serves. The warmed water returns back on the plant where it is chilled and recirculated again.

This technique reduces alot the overall costs of cooling off buildings and is more enviromently friendly.

I was seeing this month on CNN a report about application of this technique to cool off in summer some of Toronto's downtown towers.

To add to SA BOY's post here are the renders all the towers to put things into perspective. Had a lot of spare time on my hands so I did this :

Al Burj, Proposed, 205F?, 850m+ ?

Burj Dubai, U/C, 160F (189?), 700m+ (800?)

Unnamed Res Tower, Proposed/Approved?, 110F, 400m+

23 Marina, UC/Approved?, 90F, 380m

Emirates Towers, Built, 54/56F, 309/355m

Emirates Hotel, Approved, 70F, 350m

Almas Tower, U/C, 65F, 350m

Torch Tower, Approved, 80F, 345m

Princess Tower, U/C, 90F, 340m

Najd Tower, U/C, 82F, ?m

Abbco Rotana Hotel, U/C, 72F, 333m

Al Durrah 2, Approved, 78F, 330m

One Central Park, Proposed/Approved?, 80F, 328m

Burj Al Arab, Built, 50F, 321m

Ocean Heights, UC/Approved?, 82F, 310m

Marina Gardens, Approved, 75F, ?m

Ahmed Abdul Rahim Al Attar Tower, U/C, 70F, ?m

The one thing is that while there are some amazing designs here, there are also a few of these towers that seem a bit bland and uninspiring architecturally. I like most of them however.

checked the site yesterday
the fence has been there for a few months though
doesn't really have anything to do with the tower

we also know of at least 3 more 100F propsals including 2 140F towers by KM Properties and a 101F tower by dimentions. By all accounts they should be built.

^ That is the equivalent of 705 meters, measured in FEETs.
