I think NY may be a special case since it's pretty deep .The old cut and cover methods lines in the early 1900's can't be done anymore and the new lines are all going much lower than a normal line hence the extra engineering needed. All the cost for the rolling stock and tracks and computers will more or less be the same. The difference will be the grades and stations and how to connect them. Trying to come up with ways to bypass the existing buidlings et al should be where the big expenses come from plus of course digging on the upper east (where i understand is not the legendary manahattan bedrock where skyscrapers roost) is more expensive as it's a lot damper 9wet).

9.48 billion yuan = US$1.17 billion
US$53 million / km
Cheapest, so far, which is no surprise when it comes to China. How much of that system is underground?

I haven't been able to find a breakdown of the underground and above ground sections, but here is further information about the Shenyang subway project : http://www.beijingportal.com.cn/[email protected]

Excerpt :
The sky-high cost of the tube project is always the first and greatest challenge for the municipal government. According to the Ministry of Construction, every kilometre of subway carries a price tag of 550 million yuan (US$66 million). Moreover, the local government cannot count on the financial support from the central government.

A tunnel in Paris = from 120 to 200 million € per km.

The tunnel projected between Gare de Lyon and Gare du Nord is estimated at 1 billion € for 5 kms (200 mln €/km).

In Palma de Mallorca (Spain) the first underground line costs 115 million euros and then the trains cost 15 million euros. It's being built at the moment and it'll be ready in less than a year.

I remember once i've read in a newspaper of a figure of 40-60 million $ per km in Istanbul. In Istanbul they're building and projected to build more than 200 km subway and rail systems, including a undersea tunnel between Asian and European side of the city.

Marmaray project is 76 km and it will cost 2,5 billion dollars. 32 million $ per km.

Madrid is on a range of being between 3 times and 8 times less expensive to construct metros.

This is explains why they have been able to construct so many km of metro in such a short amount of time.

Madrid´s low costs are apparently explained by the fact that they built a lot in a short time, this saves money according to experts.
