I wonder how nice it would look if they just filled in the hole.

If the ferris wheel is still going ahead I guess that means that the bottom of the hole is just covered by the facade, rather than actually enclosed. The reason the hole was truncated at the bottom was apparentely because of it's resemblance to the Japanese flag - anyone know the truth behind that?

This is from Emporis:
The circular aperture at the top of the building represents 'heaven' and also reduces wind load on the building.

@Culwulla : Drawing is great because i think you are very right with the height they are at right now. (max 30 meters)
So still a long way to go here. Looking forward to it.

thanks guys. yeah 30m/100ft doesnt look much for a 492m/1614ft structure.
am i right in saying that SWFC is currently 2nd tallest bldg UC? So Burj Dubia and Taipai101 will be higher , thus SWFC will be 3rd tallest in world on completion?

Burj Dubai-705m
Taipai101-508m
SWFC-492m

Well it's pipped by Busan Lotte Tower (494m) by 2m but whether or not that's actually under construction is debatable. Both SSP & Emporis list it as UC but there isn't much evidance of that.

I'd imagine SWFC would be completed before Burj Dubai. According to SSP SWFC due in 2007, BD not until 2008

In fact, this building has some good chances to briefly hold the title of world's tallest building. It's well underway and there is a possibility that it tops up before Burj Dubai. If it is the case, I would be very surprised if they don't add up the 16 missing metres to beat Taipei 101.

I think this is a matter of pride for this building ^ ^

Also to consider is Abraj Al Bait in Mecca. There are some evidences that the complex is under construction, and it includes a 485m tower. I don't know what is the status of this tower right now, but it is not impossible that it is far more advanced than both SWFC and Burj Dubai. I think it's not unlikely that the developers of this tower add up a few metres to grab the world's tallest title, if they have the chance.

Guys, that's really a race we're watching ^ ^
