^That tower in Mecca is well underway. It's much more advanced then any of the other wtb's underconstruction. There was a thread here or on SSP that showed its progress a while back.

So this is going pretty fast. Doesn't that green netting make you even more curious about what it looks like right now?

According to someone working in Shanghai Urban Planning and Administration Bureau, the design of the building is modified AGAIN. In the up-to-date design, THE BIG HOLE IS GONE. And now the building looks like this:

Damn, is this true?

From can opener to door stop, what will they change the design to next? I'm not sure what to make of this news. It looks ok, but the hole gave it character.

I thought the hole was supposed to help with the wind? I dont think they can just remove it without reengineering a lot of the structural support of the tower.

I liked the hole and the walkway! BOO if they remove it.

Another modified design from xitek.com

I think it's better than the screwdriver.

I think I like that one better.

Why waste space for a hole and a ferris wheel, just put the observation along the top. That would be one of the most beautiful observation points ever.

Don't you like the idea of having no hole whatsoever? Removing the hole altogether makes the building look much sleeker and functional.

I dont think it's true. It's not just like that, not just get the hole out when ever u want to. The main propose of the hole is to reduce the wind-Load on the upper part of the tower, without it the columns has to be much bigger, wall much thicker, glass specification will have to be changed and Diafram-wall in the foundation also has to be changed due to higher pressure of wind-resistance.

that hole got somethg to do with feng shui. not an artistic purpose.. Since the object(bldg) is very tall n huge, it has to balance yin n yang because it is blocking the flow of wind. Wind must be allow to go thru the building so that the bldg coexist with nature, not against it.

Feng Shui exists OUTSIDE Hong Kong??? Really??

The architects of the building by the way are not Chinese, I believe it was done by a Japanese firm.

I believe nothing has changed willing to put money on the fact that there is gonna be a hole. I see it as very unlikely that a major design change would take place when the building is WELL underway, and the design has been this way for over 10 years now! Surely any design changes would have taken place during the time when construction couldnt commence rather than now.

The tower client/owner is chinese. When u designed, surely u got to know client preferences, isn't it?

I was seriously starting to like the idea of no hole.
