But then again nobody knows how tall BD will be and how tall the spire will be and weather it will have 160 floors, 189 floors, or 196 floors as Emaar advertises in it webshite (no spelling error)

1. Burj Dubai
2. Shanghai World Financial Center - the focus of this thread
3. Union Square Phase 7
4. Taipei 101
5. Fordham Spire
6. Sears Tower
... (my own list goes on, I even have an xls file for that )

There are some potential 2010 buildings missing here but I won't really believe in Park Square Tower, Al Burj or Russia Tower until I see some real U/C pics. The same goes for Busan Lotte BTW. A hole in the ground is not enough

OK, back to SWFC now.

Edit: oh, one more thing. I realize that Fordham's status is still "proposed" but I have the feeling this building has a way better chance to be built that high and be finished in a few years than some other crazy projects out there.
I agree with your assesment Darius. Just don't forget to pencil in Lotte 2 at 494m or 1624 ft. The foundation is being dug for that and it should be complete by now or by very soon. Stick this one after BD for now.

Actually, in a recent lecture given in Chicago last tuesday, architect Adrian Smith and structural engineer William Baker said BD will have between 160-169 floors. They said that couldn't comment on the height of the tower, other than to say it will be taller than 2,000 feet.

i dont think this is true either. Filling the hole means the wind loading would SIGNIFICANTLY increase, that mean they will need to dramatically change/ reinforce the structural system. I don't think it is worth the cost, and i think the developer is smart enough to know that. Not to mention the time required to get all the new blueprints approved again.

I don't think that they have actually finalized if the hole at the top will be included or not. So we just have to wait and see.

You right ! They're still have time to finalize the top with circular design or square design. Even nothing on the top. We'll see the
final soon.

It will definitely have a hole. Without a hole, the top portion effectively becomes a giant sail, making the structure unstable.

I walked past the other day and all of the renderings on the walls of the site have been changed and now they all have a SQUARE hole. It looks horrible.

Circular design is better than square. I think the square hole is too sting eyes
(Too many shape angles in the tower) and too strong feeling.

No Way! I've always refused to believe that they were going to change the design of the hole! This is terrible news!!!!! I suppose the tower still looks ok overall, but it's hideous compared to the design with the round hole! The old design was a classic in my mind, but this new design makes this just another generic attempt at a supertall. Horrible, horrible news. Ugly. They should never let politics influence art and architecture.

By the way, thanks ENDORPHINS for posting the links.

yes i agree that it isnt that bad as it fits in well with the skyline and also it doesnt look to much like the kingdom centre in Saudi Arabia (the previous design) though this final design looks different from the squarish hole rendiering we saw ealier in this thread

They could build a vertical spire in the middle and make the Hanzi that they commonly use to write "China" ("zhong")
