OH MY GOSH, this tower's architectural quality just went down the drain!

dang it, why can't the chinese and japanese governments stop trying to flame each other with stupid past WWII issues? i had enough of the chinese government trying to incite their people to harbor negative opinions against the japanese and of the japanese government allowing textbooks that lie to their people about the atrocities they committed in WWII. both sides ought to stop acting like immature children and get their acts together and make up.

if they really want to argue over this, don't take this all the way to the SWFC!!! now the building has lost it architectural uniqueness all because of some meaningless political bickering.

the current design isn't that bad, but the building pretty much lost its original futuristic personality with the change of its main architectural element. the current hole seems to make it more sinister-looking compared to its rather optimistic-looking previous design.

sigh...if only japan didn't go through that late '90s economic recession, they would've finished the building in 2001 with the original circular hole design. now all we can hope is that the two nations can eventually stop trying to bash each other and someone can come back change the building's top back to normal.

B is the most sensible.

It means....."Stop Japanese symbolism NOW!" or "Stop! Do not fly through here without permission of the Chinese Fed, especially any Japanese Imperialist aircraft."

BTW, I wonder if they will put an upper observatory above the squared circle or will they just stick to the skybridge?

Yeah, I agree. It looks kind of evil now! It was such an amazing building when it was a circle. It just *fit* better. I'd also heard that the radius of the circular hole was exactly the same as the radius of the spheres on the pearl tower, which is incredibly cool (although I've never seen any confirmation of that).

I agree, I was thinking of the same thing... looks evil now.
BTW, I think design K makes the most sense, it symbolizes the Chinese star and looks a lot better than that dumb trapezoid thing. Fitting a skybridge across the star would also be sort of cool. Maybe a slightly upward curved skybridge...

Actually with this design they could have a world class restaurant at the top like the World Trade Center had the "Windows of the World."

Some people think it looks like a saber with a Japanese flag inserts in the center of Shanghai .As some Geomancer think,it is very disadvantageous to China. And some Chinese are against Japan ,so at last, they have to amend the plan. This building was expected to start with the cycle view design in 1997.but soon Asian economy crisis broken ,and it had to be stopped.

Shanghai people they want to show their rapid economical power by world tallest tower (SWFC) in Shanghai. There is nothing wrong to make a circle on the top of the tower and to be constructed by Japanese.
Unfortunately, everyone thought that the circle is look like a symbol of Japanese. So, Shanghai people they don’t want to see it in the top of Shanghai’s skyline. Because of the circular hole put Shanghai people to shame. Circular hole could be a best final, but they want to remove the symbol of Japanese by re-designed the hole from circle to square or nothing on the top etc.
If this tower was not built by Japanese, the circular hole will not be problem and a debate topic to you as I thought.
I don’t know what’s shape of the hole will be finalized. The circle is still the best among those choices.
