If they don't destroy all those famous central valley farming, it won't probably happen. I can't imagine Sacramento to Bakersfield being the longest metro in the world. There are tons of gaps due to the rural farmings in between.

I say go for it. SoCal sprawl is beginning to dissipate itself in the Coachella and Imperial Valleys.

Better sprawl, please.

How many people a city like this would have? 20 million?

The Imperial Valley will fill first, haven't you guys heard, its now "The IC".

And if the central valley fills up completly that would be sad.

As if the air pollution is not bad enough, perhaps in 2100 people in the valley will wear a gas mask.

yeah, farming is a big part of the californian economy and they wont destroy all those farms. Besides, it wouldnt be the longest city since its much more than one city. And look at areas like LA-OC-SD...thats large already and getting larger. so thats the got a big head start.

my guess is that by 2100 we'll have learned a lot about polution. pretty much evverything will be electronic, digital and wireless. we won't have cds, dvds cd-rom. we'll have chips in our backs for storing data speakers and monitors implanted in our head

Maybe by then they'll have hydrogen-powered cars.

Highly unlikely

It's not going to happen. If you have ever flown over the central valley, you'd see that there is simply way too much open farm land for these cities to grow together. (By the way, the northern most city in the central valley is Redding, not Redwood City - which is in the Bay Area.) Further, there is already a major effort at virtually every level of government to preserve the farmland we have. California's central valley is simply the single most important piece of agricultural land-mass in the entire US, and possibly the whole world. It is often referred to as the fruit and bread basket of the world. So, no, we are not going to allow urban sprawl to completely consume this irreplaceable asset.

Huh? California grows by at least 400,000 annually. Idaho is the last of our worries.

those 400,000 people are from the births and people moving in FROM outside the US, eg: mexico, asia, and other countries. Average of over 100,000+ people annually move out of California are US residents, most of them though.

Actually California's Net Growth between 1998-2003 is like this..From The California State Statistical Abstract(Data available thru Dec 2003)
1998 +416,000
1999 +558,000
2000 +688,000
2001 +674,000
2002 +542,000
2003 +549,000

1998-2003 +3,247,000

This is after subtracting people leaving and people dying.

They are actually mostly international migration and the high birthrates because California has so many people with poverty. Not many move to California from other state, more than 100,000 people who live in California move away to other states. Those are the breakdown of the total migration Ya can't argue with that
