The essence of New York. The architectural caliber of the city was irreparably damaged when it failed to continue building towers of such class.

The New York skyline 1913-1958: Rest in peace.

I am not saying that all post-war architecture is bad. If that was the case, then I wouldn't be wanting the Twins to be rebuilt, and they are post-war buildings. IMO, I feel that international and modernism were the only good designs to come after WWII, b/c they showed how great they could be just by being simple. Others will probably disagree with me and say that they are nothing but faceless boxes, but I feel that they are better than what is being built right now with a design such as deconstructivism.

I really have never heard anyone say these buildings are 'ugly.' Huh? I'm insanely jealous of NYC's prewar architecture, I wish we had a quarter of its stock.

It's all to do with cost, if they could find a cheaper way to build and put the detail into buildings like they used to, then I can not see why anyone would choose to build the boring glass boxes we have now.

Despite calling them by their present day names, I still kept the years they were built. Some of them feel more like juxtapositions in that they were just left there even though everything that was around them is gone. Compared to midtown, the Financial Dist has a larger collection of buildings that date even before 1900. Another thing that guidebooks don't touch on much of this area unless its something major like the WTC, Brooklyn Br, or Liberty Island. Since there is a lot of 19th century architecture as well as some from even earlier, it might be a good idea to place a historic trail as there is already in Boston and Philly.
