There are probably few events there because it's not owned by the council (I don't think?). At the time of its construction, Millennium Square was periphery- meant to become the new heart of the city. Which I think has largely been succesful. The same vision is needed for Armouries Square. Clarence Dock could be the district centre for the East Bank, Hunslet and South Central Leeds if it widened the names it is trying to attract to services like Pharmacies instead of just designer boutiques.

I'm guessing Clarence Dock's developers wouldn't want it resembling somewhere like Hunslet District Centre though, with Morrisons, Greggs, William Hill etc - they want to keep it 'exclusive'. See your point about basic facilities like pharmacies though...

I remember some Manc referring to The Light as a 'sub Printworks' on here once. Not a chance, The Printworks resembles the Metro centre circa 1990.

I've read Trinity Leeds will reinstate Bank Street as a right of way, and (old news) the underpass on Boar Lane will in fact be built out to front the street itself.

Yeah the inside of the Printworks is a bit 'fake'. Well, very.

They wouldn't want it to resemble a district centre no, but that doesn't mean it couldn't do the job on a wealthier level. I mean instead of Morrisons, it could try and attract Waitrose (which actually was in its original brand book) or M&S (although it has Tesco that does the job now). A shop like Thresher would do well too. Also Roundhay supports shops like Bang and Olufsen suprisingly so surely Clarence Dock would be able to as well? It would be more attractive for shops like that to locate at CD as people could carry items easily from the shop to the car, something they are unable to do in the shopping core.

January 2009

EVERYMAN MAKES ITS NORTHERN PREMIERE AT TRINITY LEEDS

Boutique cinema operator Everyman will be making its northern debut at the landmark Trinity Leeds scheme after exchanging contracts with Trinity Quarter Developments on a 25,0000 sq ft space as leisure anchor.

The purpose-built complex with four screens will be Everyman Media Group’s first venue outside of London and the South East and signals the calibre of leisure and retail operators the development is attracting.

The one million sq ft scheme will transform the area around Briggate and Commercial Street and deliver a vibrant new setting for the heart of the UK’s third largest city.

The scheme, which will include more than 120 retail units and transform the Burton and Trinity arcades and Leeds Shopping Plaza into a single seamless shopping environment, is being developed by Trinity Quarter Developments – a joint venture between Land Securities and Caddick Developments. Opening is planned for 2011. Trinity Leeds’ leasing director John Grimes said: “This is a real coup for the city. Everyman is an innovative, independent cinema operator that creates an individualistic and personalised viewing experience, combining a mix of film, events and live entertainment within its premises, where customers can relax in luxurious surroundings and enjoy a true entertainment experience.”

Kath Sloggett, CEO of Everyman Media Group, said: “We are delighted to have found the ideal venue for our first venture in the North of England at a very exciting time of expansion for the group as we aim to take our lifestyle brand with its localised community approach to major locations across the UK. “Trinity Leeds provides us with a superb setting in the heart of the UK’s third largest city and the demographic of Leeds and its wider catchment is ideal for the specialist offer that we bring.”

The boutique cinema, which will be opening alongside leading fashion brands in a destination served by a stylish new café/restaurant quarter, looks set to boost the 24-hour economy of Leeds.

Leeds City Council Leader Councillor Andrew Carter said: “This is exactly the type of high quality operator that we want to see in Leeds and we are able to introduce through Trinity Leeds and other major developments, providing a high quality mix of shopping, leisure and entertainment facilities that will create jobs and draw people into the city by day and night.”

Everyman is already operating at a number of landmark London locations, including Hampstead Village, Belsize Park, Baker Street and Islington, in addition to three venues in Surrey and one in Winchester.

I too was wondering why the Topshop building has had a hole knocked out of it at the back, as this building is staying. Obviously there is a good chance it will have a new entrance into the centre itself but I'm not sure if the store is being extended or modified greatly.

Elsewhere, the building on Trinity Street next to M & S I mentioned a while back is coming down nicely, only the ground floor is left.

M & S itself has hoarding around part of it on the Briggate elevation, they have taken down the old signage and have replaced it with a temporary sign. The new signage actually got turned down by the planning board recently but has been resubmitted.

The new Wilkinsons has opened on Albion Street and the existing store has closed ready for the next stage of work at Trinity to begin.

To add to the above, it's now clear that the little bit at the back of Topman is going completely.

I'm not sure whether this was actually part of Topman itself or not but I'm presuming it has some structural relevance to the walkway area that has not as yet been demolished immediately to the right of Topman, which is why they have waited til now to remove the last little part remaining.

Nice picture btw theboyer, it is very difficult to get a good view into the site.

I'd expect another crane in the not too distant future towards the Briggate side of the site.

Is this still the case? I know the original proposal called for the Topshop building to be incorporated into the new shopping centre. But I think I recall seeing something more recently which suggested that this idea was no longer feasible and that Topshop was going to be demolished. The trouble is, I can't remember when or where I saw the post so I may be barking up a gum tree.

Things may have developed further, but the last I heard is that the idea of retaining the whole Topshop frontage was not possible, so some of the frontage would have to go. Looking at the webcam and the scaffolding I think (but of course this is just my interpretation) that the parts within the red boundary I have indicated will be demolished and the rest will remain.

To my knowledge the building that section is connected to (the red brick/brown square one) is due to be demolished also, but they had to resubmit a planning application for it as it included design changes. Not sure on the status of the application though.

Despite progress from the webcam view appearing quite snail like recently, there is still reasonable activity going on at the site.

Hoardings appear to be going up round the old mk one unit on Albion Street ahead of its demo which starts next month. Specsavers is still open however, though there was a planning app today for new signage at the unit they are moving to further up the street.

Interestingly at M&S the hoardings at the Briggate side of the store now say new look store opening summer 2009. Firstly, this doesnt seem to give them a huge amount of time given the changes they are supposedly making and secondly, surely this means there will be further disruption in the future when the store is integrated into the Trinity Quarter itself?
