it hasnt for a long while. happily we or some of us have gained consciousness and interventions are finally taking place but Lisbon has been in bad shape for the past few years and it still is. but the same goes with paris actually, though the haussmann buildings look well taken cared of from the outside in many cases they're left to rot

It's not that we don't love our buildings. Generally we are proud of our heritage and history, however, a set of unfortunate laws dictated the slow death of our historical centres. Both passed during the Estado Novo times, one outlawed the increase of rent in historical areas effectively preventing landlords to undertake maintenance work and the other privatised land effectively allowing the chaotic expansion of our larger cities. Now all those mistakes are slowly being undone but in light of the current economic crisis it may take longer than anticipated...

though we might consistently go back to remind the glory of the 15/16th century to snatch the little self esteem we have left most definitely never even noticed how damaged lisbon currently is.

those are near lisbon's main square - terreiro do paço, on the way to Saint Apolonia's railway station. it's sad coz they're beautiful. also i don't like the colors in which some are painted, colors that go from moss green to ugly tinges of beige

I think that everyone has a pretty good idea of how serious the problem is, especially because every once in a while a building comes crashing down. Plus, all that one needs to do is to step outside of the historical areas to see a completely different Lisbon, where public space is better taken care of and buildings are generally in good condition. To be fair I don't see how we can expect things to improve fast without addressing fundamental issues, such as the stifling regulations that have been preventing the letting market from functioning. That is despite a recent spur in building renovations around the city...

lisbon's suburbs are probably more dreadful than downtown, i'm not sure where u've been, certainly not were i have. that's entirely due to the blatant nonexistence of strict slash functional city planning protocoles. and though i acknowledge a set of unfortunate laws prevented lisbon from developing in that specific department the truth is out and in your face: the average portuguese person does not care for their patrimony unless a foreigner does and i got TugaMTL to prove it
