+1
They'll remove the roof and add more rows to the 3th tier!

Does anybody know the height of the highest row of seats above pitch level? I really would like to make some comparisons!

Nice ground, seems a lot more compact and enclosed when you're actually there.

Plenty of room for expansion, got a feeling they'll pull out all the stops to expand asap.

I can see the two ends being different, one end as three tiers in the same mould as the two sides and one end being completely re built as a huge single tier.

No inside info, however, I can see this happening at a few English grounds, getting away from 2/3 tier bowls and going back to a more traditional English type ground.

I think most clubs are now looking more at how to improve atmosphere rather than make symmetrical but soulless bowls ala Wembley and that suits me fine!

Now that really would be awesome! Just a quick before and after I did showing what the 60,000 version could look like.

Adding third tiers to the ends isn't going to yield 6k per section, especially if they don't touch the roof. If anything, the dynamics of cost efficiency suggest they would have to redo the roof in order to make something worth the expense. After all, the further you get from the pitch the worse the views will be and thus the less thay can charge for the seat.

80k? Doubt they'll surpass 60k in my lifetime, and if they do it's only because FFP has failed.

80k is utter nonsense anyway. Their owners seem erudite, and no self respecting businessmen would advocate that City should go from 48k to 80k in capacity. 60k seems to be fashionable in England as a pass mark for "big" clubs, something that is very much in line with what City can hope to attract on a fortnightly basis.

LOL city 80k next Chelsea are going to go for 100k, these owners gotta to realise it takes more than 10 years to build a loyal and large fan base, if city fans are honest they were a decent followed team when they wasnt brought out but they hardly were likely to fill 60k , and they will only fill 60k with all the fake plastic glory hunter fans they are likely to get in the future only one team in England could ever fill over 80k thousand every week and its not man city

I think adding the same 3rd tier as the sides doesnt mean to rebuild the roof at the ends. I think its possible just to lift it up with a litte dismatling. Shoulnt be that complicated.

60.000 OK, but 80.000 will need lift of the complete roof.

I ll be happy if they go for megalomaniac stadias in england. prices are too high nowadays to attract the younger.

ManUtd really need to rethink their situation if they dont want get left behind.

Which part do Manchester United need to rethink? They have the largest club stadium with the largest average attendance; they are filled to capacity most matched and accrue the highest matchday revenue in the Premier League, and by extension the world.

City are to discuss plans for a proposed £50m expansion of the Etihad Stadium by 2015.

The Blues want to speak with local residents before forging ahead with the scheme, which would add a 6,000-seater third tier on the South Stand and increase capacity to 54,000.

The club, sensitive to the escalation of cost of match tickets, hopes to provide a significant number of cheap seasoncards - costing under £300 – in the new section, which would also include an hospitality area.

The decision to start consultation on the project was given the go-ahead at a board meeting held in London on Saturday morning.

City will start talking to residents closest to the stadium next month, and could submit a planning application in Autumn for third tiers to be added to both ends of the ground.

That would eventually raise the capacity to 60,000 – making it the third biggest club ground in England behind Old Trafford and the Emirates - but while they want to press ahead with the South Stand expansion, there are no concrete plans to develop the North Stand just yet.

If the planning stage goes smoothly, City hope to begin work on the South Stand in January, and are aiming for a completion date of summer 2015.

As part of the expansion, the club is set to come up with a revised plan for car parking on match days, to minimise the impact of more fans travelling to games, and for other events.

The decision comes after the Blues sold out all but one of their Premier League games this season, with demand suggesting they will fill the increased capacity.

It is also a response to indications, during consultations with supporters, that more cheap seats and more mid-range hospitality would be welcomed.
